Elastic, the Search AI Company, seeks a Senior Software Developer to advance Elasticsearch performance tuning. You will contribute to performance engineering across distributed systems, focusing on core optimizations, modeling, and benchmarking in Java environments.

The role emphasizes collaboration, automation, and AI-assisted optimization, with a strong track record in profiling and improving large-scale data-store performance.

Qualifications

• Deep knowledge of Java internals and JVM memory management, with thread-safe, high-performance coding experience.
• Proven profiling and optimization experience in distributed systems, using benchmarking tools like JMH and Rally.
• Solid understanding of distributed architectures, partition tolerance, and scaling challenges in large data stores.
• Experience using AI or advanced tooling to accelerate optimization and automate benchmarking workflows.
• Ability to collaborate effectively within a team and across functions.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to core performance engineering initiatives from development to production, delivering impactful optimizations.
• Implement foundational performance models for complex distributed systems.
• Support optimization strategies to keep Elasticsearch performant, predictable, and scalable.
• Profile and analyze system behavior to identify bottlenecks in logging, metrics, vector search, and ES|QL.
• Ensure robust performance benchmarks and regression detection for stateful and serverless architectures.
• Collaborate to apply performance-focused development practices to new features.
• Contribute to automation efforts with AI-assisted optimization harnesses for profiling and benchmarking.
• Provide technical guidance and peer reviews to engineers.
