EPCOR's Water Services (EWS) group has a full-time permanent opportunity for an experienced Health & Safety Senior Advisor to join the Health, Safety and Environment team working out of our Aurum site in Edmonton, AB.
The Senior Advisor, Health & Safety (H&S) supports EPCOR’s vision to be a company where ‘safety matters most’ and demonstrates the commitment to ‘put safety first in everything we do’. The role involves liaising with internal and external customers to support business units in managing operational risks and achieving strategic H&S goals. This includes developing and implementing H&S programs, responding to incidents, complying with policies, standards, procedures, and legislation, and taking proactive measures to improve performance in health and safety.
What you’d be responsible for :
- Liaising with internal and external stakeholders to support and anticipate legislative and regulatory changes, and promote innovation in managing H&S.
- Assisting Employees, Managers and Directors in performing hazard and field compliance assessments.
- Leading and supporting H&S strategic work plans and initiatives.
- Facilitating the implementation and administration of the H&S Management System.
- Leading H&S knowledge and skill development, as well as the responsibilities, obligations, and actions required to meet legal requirements.
- Developing criteria for monitoring H&S performance measures, interpreting results, recommending improvements and minimizing risks.
- Providing feedback on new H&S training courses and creating and/or reviewing new protocols/procedures.
- Networking with industry peers to ascertain best practices for adoption into EPCOR.
- Providing interpretation and application of H&S rules, regulations and legislation to management, staff and H&S Committees.
- Developing and writing H&S team talks, lessons learned, safety alerts and other safety communications.
- Providing mentoring, coaching and support to H&S Advisors in the development and maintenance of the H&S Management System and our customer’s needs.
- Supporting Corporate and Shared Services Health, Safety, Environment and Technical Training area.
- Analyzing and interpreting information to communicate technical and theoretical concepts and knowledge about H&S.
- Advising managers and supervisors on appropriate management practices to achieve a positive, resilient safety culture.
What’s required to be successful :
- Completion of post-secondary education from a recognized post-secondary educational institute (Certificate, Diploma, or Degree) in Occupational Health and Safety or Environmental/Occupational Hygiene.
- Good standing designation with the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (CRSP or CRST); or Board of Certified Safety Professionals (CSP or ASP).
- Experience that includes:
- 5+ years of experience managing H&S processes, programs and tools.
- Public speaking, presenting, and facilitating, as well as creating/delivering presentation materials.
- Conducting incident investigations, root cause analyses, and audits.
- Use of auditing tools including the Alberta Partnerships Certificate of Recognition and ISO 45001:2018.
- Strong understanding of H&S regulatory requirements.
- Proficient level with Microsoft Word, Outlook, SharePoint and Excel usage.
- Sound comprehension with project management, risk analysis and the development of mitigation strategies.
- Valid Class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operators License.
- Proven ability to:
- Consistently apply strategic and critical thinking in all aspects of work.
- Identify continual improvement opportunities and to work with various groups to implement.
- Experience in the following areas would be considered an asset:
- In the utility industry (Specifically Water Distribution and Transmission), Construction, and/or a trade’s environment.
- Previous operational or trades experience.
Other important facts about this job :
- This is a professional level position that typically works Monday to Friday (40 hours per week).
- The successful Senior Advisor, Health & Safety (H&S) must provide their own reliable vehicle with appropriate insurance and in accordance with EPCOR’s Employee Mileage Reimbursement Policy.
- A requirement of working for EPCOR is that you are at least 18 years of age, successfully attained a high school diploma (GED, or equivalent level of secondary education) and legally entitled to work in Canada. (A copy of a valid work permit may be required.)
- If you are considered for the position, clearance on all applicable background checks (which may include criminal, identity, educational, and/or credit) and professional reference checks is required.
- A technical/practical assessment may be administered during the selection process and this exercise will be used as a part of the selection criterion.
- To meet the physical demands required of some positions, candidates must be in good physical condition and willing to work in all weather conditions.
- Prior infractions for unsafe driving behaviours will be evaluated and considered for non-selection regardless of current demerits on file.
