Position Overview

The Regional Health & Safety Manager-North’s primary objective is to support execution of Hexion’s strategic and tactical plan for all Health and Safety matters for the five manufacturing sites located in the northern half of the U.S., and three sites in Canada. The successful candidate understands the regulatory and tactical overlap of the Environmental, Health, Safety and Process Safety regulations for the U.S. and Canada. This position fosters a culture of engagement, empowerment, accountability, execution, and compliance through direction and oversight of programs that support of Hexion’s primary goal of a compliant and incident-free workplace. The Regional Health & Safety Manager plans and directs activities for alignment with the corporation’s EHS goals and initiatives with each assigned manufacturing site. The position provides leadership, coaching and technical expertise to sites and site leadership teams to meet these goals.

Job Responsibilities

H&S Function Specific

  • Program Leadership : Assist in the development and implementation of employee safety & health programs.
  • Project Participation and Contribution : Participate on EHS innovation, improvement and realignment project teams at the site, regional and global levels.
  • Administration of Training : Provide and monitor safety training programs to instruct employees in site EHS policies and procedures.
  • Culture Transformation : Focus on promoting and supporting an EHS culture from within by driving the implementation of core EHS programs, policies and initiatives across the sites.
  • Compliance : Assess facility operations for regulatory applicability, and local regulatory compliance with health & safety requirements.
  • Chemical Safety : Ensure chemical safety by developing and implementing spill and leak prevention and detection processes, properly storing and handling incompatible chemicals, conducting safety training, maintaining SDS, assisting in monitoring chemical exposure, and managing chemical waste.
  • Program Support : Actively drive and support for Health and Safety programs (e.g., workplace safety and contractor administration) with operations and plant leadership level associates at three regional manufacturing sites.
  • Hazard Identification and Corrective Action Development : Assist and lead the Identification of hazards across all sites and develop effective corrective actions to address and mitigate these hazards, ensuring a safer workplace.
  • Lead Incident Investigations : and drive corrective action through cause mapping and 5-why analysis.
  • Data Management and Reporting : Instruct the sites in Maintaining records of safety-related incidents and submit necessary reports to regulatory bodies.
  • Risk Assessment and Mitigation : Identify potential risks and develop strategies to mitigate them, ensuring a safe working environment.
  • Hazardous Materials Management : Administer and confirm the safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous chemicals at the sites.
  • On-site Presence : Be an active, engaged part of the site safety teams by interacting with associates remotely and in the field.
  • Regulatory Agency Liaison : Assist and lead the site personnel in interfacing with regulatory agencies during inspections and audits.

Organizational Leadership

  • Strategy Alignment : Collaborate with senior leadership (TO Leadership) to understand the organization's strategic goals and objectives. Align Health and Safety initiatives with these goals to ensure coherence and relevance.
  • Change Management : Develop and implement change management strategies to facilitate smooth transitions during periods of Health and Safety. Provide guidance on overcoming resistance to change and fostering a positive attitude towards innovation.
  • Team Coaching : Work closely with cross-functional teams to coach and mentor members on best practices for executing Health and Safety projects. Provide support in goal setting, problem-solving, and decision-making to ensure project success.
  • Training and Development : Identify skill gaps within the organization and design training programs to address them. Deliver workshops, seminars, and other learning interventions to enhance employees' capabilities in areas such as change leadership, agile methodologies, and effective management of health and safety.
  • Performance Monitoring : Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness of Health and Safety initiatives. Regularly assess progress against these KPIs and provide feedback to stakeholders on areas for improvement.
  • Stakeholder Engagement : Build strong relationships with stakeholders across the organization, including executives, managers, and frontline employees. Act as a trusted advisor and advocate for the Health and Safety agenda.
  • Continuous Improvement : Promote a culture of continuous improvement by encouraging feedback, experimentation, and learning. Identify opportunities for optimizing processes and implementing innovative solutions.
  • Communication : Develop clear and compelling communication materials to articulate the vision, objectives, and benefits of Health and Safety initiatives. Ensure that messaging is consistent and tailored to different audiences.
  • Risk Management : Anticipate potential risks and challenges associated with Health and Safety efforts and develop mitigation strategies to address them. Proactively identify and resolve issues that may hinder progress.
  • Knowledge Sharing : Facilitate knowledge sharing sessions to capture lessons learned from past Health and Safety projects. Encourage the dissemination of best practices and success stories throughout the organization.
  • Effectively leads manufacturing sites regarding methods to comply with U.S. and Canadian H&S regulations.
  • Drives scope development and management.

  • Comfortable managing raw data and understanding how it fits into the broader picture of the specific analysis being performed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 7+ years in chemical or related manufacturing with a record of advancement to H&S responsibilities covering sites in the U.S. and Canada.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of requirements of U.S. and Canadian H&S regulations.
  • Previous involvement with Process Safety Management regulated facilities.
  • Experience participating in restructuring and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ability to drive change through people leadership and capability building.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (both verbally and in writing).
  • Proven experience in project management.
  • Strong coaching and mentoring skills with the ability to inspire, motivate, and develop teams.
  • Strong understanding of business processes, change management principles, and project management methodologies.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze data, identify insights, and drive data-driven decision-making.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Solid understanding of project management methodologies and tools. Ability to use our internal tool of WAVE.

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in industrial safety, mechanical / industrial engineering, hazardous materials management, or a related field is required.
  • Master’s degree in an applicable field a plus.
