Job summary

Markel is seeking a senior actuary to lead the actuarial strategy and analysis for the Workers’ Compensation segment. You will partner with Underwriting, Claims, Finance, and senior leadership to drive profitability and informed decision-making, while overseeing pricing, profitability monitoring, and portfolio analytics.

You will mentor actuarial staff, influence strategic initiatives, and communicate complex analyses clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, or related quantitative field.
• ACAS required; FCAS preferred.
• Minimum of 8-10 years of actuarial experience, with a strong emphasis in Workers Compensation.

Responsibilities

• Lead actuarial analyses and provide strategic guidance for the Workers Compensation segment.
• Develop pricing analyses, rate indications, and profitability assessments to support underwriting.
• Collaborate with Underwriting, Claims, Finance, and Executive Management to identify risks and opportunities.
• Monitor portfolio results, loss trends, and underwriting performance to provide actionable recommendations.
• Provide actuarial support for business planning, forecasting, and reinsurance evaluations.
