Senior Accountant
The Senior Accountant plays a critical role in recording, maintaining, and reporting financial transactions to safeguard the organization's assets and ensure the responsible use of public funds by overseeing and performing the full range of professional accounting work. This includes handling complex and technical accounting tasks, conducting research and analysis, preparing detailed accounting reports, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations. Additionally, they provide subject matter expertise, orientation, mentoring, and training to the accounting staff to enhance overall departmental effectiveness.
Qualifications
The following represents the typical way to achieve the necessary skills, knowledge and ability to qualify for this position:
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Eight plus (8+) years of progressively professional level accounting experience. A master’s degree may substitute for two years of the required experience.
- Or an equivalent combination of education and years of experience.
Skills
- Extensive hands-on experience with accounting functions including month-end close, journal entries, account reconciliations, revenue recognition, and administrative expense analysis.
- Extensive experience with accounting software applications including building charts of accounts and financial statements.
- Advanced analytical skills with the ability to interpret and present complex data
- Proficiency with Windows-based PC systems and Microsoft products (Outlook, Excel, Teams, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Advanced problem-solving skills.
Knowledge
- Comprehensive knowledge of accounting principles and practices, including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB).
- Extensive knowledge of methods and techniques of general ledger administration.
Abilities
- Demonstrated ability to identify issues, conduct research, gather and analyze information and data, reach logical and sound conclusions, utilize various reporting methods, offer recommendations and potential consequences, and mitigate risk.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Ability to pay close attention to detail and ensure data accuracy.

Duties & Responsibilities
Essential Functions
Accounting
- Oversee and perform the full range of professional accounting work, including performing the most complex and technical accounting functions.
- Prepare and review financial statements on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis to ensure adherence to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and regulatory standards.
- Conduct complex account reconciliations and analyze financial data for accuracy, organizational alignment, and regulatory compliance.
- Ensure financial statements are complete, timely, and note significant trends and variances.
- Lead the month-end and year-end processes, including reconciling state files, recording revenues and expenses, and managing cash receipts and accounts receivable.
Departmental Support
- Work with and support the Accounting and FP&A functions and other internal stakeholders.
- Ensure accurate and timely reporting of financial positions to internal stakeholders and external regulatory bodies as needed.
- Serve as the subject matter expert and assist with providing orientation, mentoring, and training to accounting staff.
- Support department audits by providing documentation, responding to auditor inquiries, and assisting with audit fieldwork as needed.
- Develop and maintain the process for recording new programs in the general ledger including identifying necessary accounts, RADs, and sub-ledgers.
Secondary Functions
- Stay updated on accounting principles, and industry trends to ensure best practices and compliance with changing standards.
- Facilitate solutions to any questions or inquiries related to accounts receivable.
- Provide peer-to-peer assistance and coverage when needed.
- Adhere to work performance norms and attendance expectations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Salary and benefits
The starting salary rangeis $83,855 - $107,714 per year, depending on the candidate’s work experience.
