The Second Cook is a critical role within our communities as it impacts the lives of residents through the strong leadership and motivation of Sienna team members.
This is a Permanent Part-Time position with 16 hours bi-weekly.

- Mon 11:00 am - 7:30 pm
- Tues OFF
- Wed OFF
- Thurs OFF
- Fri OFF
- Sat OFF
Wage leveling rate of pay $27.31 per hour until such time that wage leveling ends, then the pay rate will reflect the collective agreement pay rates.
As a Second Cook, your typical day will impact the following ways:
- Review daily menus and preparation lists, set up equipment and supplies for food preparation. Prepare food following recipes or directions. Ensure food is served at appropriate temperatures and in portion-controlled quantities.
- Inspect food preparation and serving areas to ensure observance of safe, sanitary food-handling practices; monitor proper receiving, storage, and rotation of food products to comply with health department regulations, including coverage, labeling, dating, and proper container placement.
- Complete all necessary documentation/audits (food and refrigeration temperatures, dishwashing machine temperatures if applicable, menu changes) as assigned.
- Monitor quality of food supplies received and advise the Executive Chef of problems. Report food, supply, and equipment needs to the Executive Chef or First Cook.
- Alert the Executive Chef to problems and make recommendations about corrective actions.
- Assist in the orientation and training of new food and beverage team members.
- In the absence of the First Cook, assume responsibility for departmental operations including menu changes, requisitions, and purchasing food and supplies from authorized suppliers.
- Advise the Executive Chef of all team member incidents that may result in an Occupational Accident Claim, any concerns with the physical plant, incidents or injuries, and complete required reports.
- Follow all health and safety policies and procedures. Work safely to reduce the risk of injury to self, co-workers, and residents.
- Participate actively in planning and preparing special occasion and theme meal days.
Must haves:
- Minimum one (1) year experience in volume food preparation in the hospitality or seniors living industry.
- Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent.
- Sensitivity to the dietary needs of seniors.
- Positive attitude necessary to meet the goals and standards of the home.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Valid Safe Food Handling Certificate.
- Successful completion of the prescribed Vulnerable Sector and Criminal Record Check.
Bonus points for:
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.
- Post-secondary training in food preparation from a recognized institution.
