Job summary

City of Edmonton seeks a Labourer II to maintain and beautify municipal cemeteries and burial grounds while delivering excellent customer service to visitors. You will operate tools and equipment, perform interments/disinterments, and work with minimal supervision in a sensitive environment.

This temporary full-time role supports city service delivery and may require varied shifts. Salary is hourly and benefits are provided per city policy.

Qualifications

  • Grade 10 completion preferred.
  • 1 year labour experience including maintenance, landscaping, concrete work, or groundskeeping duties, in cemeteries, parks or a similar work environment.
  • Experience with cemetery interment procedures and diverse cultural/traditional beliefs.

Responsibilities

  • Interact with the public in a professional manner, especially in sensitive situations.
  • Accommodate cultural group traditions including pall bearing for casket services.
  • Dig and locate graves, mix concrete and install monuments/headstones.
  • Perform interments and disinterments including removal and transport of remains.
  • Operate and complete minor maintenance on equipment and tools.

Job Number: 56079As a Labourer II, you will ensure proper maintenance and beautification of municipal cemeteries and traditional burial grounds while providing exceptional customer service to patrons and guests.Your ability to work with minimal supervision in a changing, sensitive environment will contribute to the success of City service delivery and operational goals.What will you do?Interact with the public in a professional manner, especially in sensitive situationsAccommodate various cultural group traditions including pall bearing for casket servicesOperate and complete minor maintenance on equipmentOperate hand tools such as planners, power saw/drills and bull floatDig and locate graves, make frames, mix concrete and install monuments/headstonesRead surveyed grades and design blueprints, ensuring accurate locating of construction pointsPerform interments and disinterments which include the removing, handling and transporting of human remainsAssist with all site maintenance activities which includes snow removal with various equipment/tools, and beautification of cemetery propertiesConstruct forms, mix concrete, install grave markers and fine finish edges around grave markersLocate grave locations without clear reference points in surveyed and unsurveyed cemeteriesPerform related work as requiredQualifications:Completion of Grade 10, High School Diploma is preferred1 year labour experience including maintenance, landscaping, concrete work, or groundskeeping duties, in cemeteries, parks or a similar work environmentAssets:Previous customer service experience in a field operations settingKnowledge of cemetery interment procedures and of various cultural/religious beliefs and traditionsHeavy Equipment Certificates/working knowledge (Skid Steer, Backhoe, etc)Current Intermediate First Aid, CPR, and AED CertificatesSkills required for success:Demonstrated ability to interact with the public in a professional manner, especially in sensitive situationsAbility to safely operate equipment and vehicles within confined spacesPhysically able to perform the assigned tasks and duties of the position, including manual labour and the use of simple hand/or power tools and light motor vehicles for long periods of time in various weather and environmental conditionsAbility to work independently and as part of a teamExcellent communication, interpersonal, customer service, organization, time management and prioritization skills requiredAlignment to our Cultural Commitments and Leadership CompetenciesEmbracing a culture of equity, diversity, reconciliation and inclusionConditions of Employment:Valid Class 5 driver’s license (or provincial equivalent).
