Hours & Schedule

16.25 hours/week

Monday-Friday, After Care 2.00 to 5.15 pm or 2.15 to 5.30 pm (3.25 hours) **Schedule may be able to be adjusted for EAs already working at George Jay in collaboration with the School.

The schedule for this position is mutually determined with the supervisor and may include before and/or after school hours, school holidays, and other program hours as required.

The primary work location will be confirmed at the time of appointment. The position may also require work at other Fernwood Neighbourhood House program locations and/or in the community.

Job Summary

We are looking for a School-Aged Worker to provide engaging, safe, and inclusive programming for school-aged children, including children with diverse support needs. The position develops and facilitates developmentally appropriate educational, recreational, indoor, and outdoor activities that support children's physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development.

General Responsibilities

Plan, implement, and evaluate developmentally appropriate activities for school-aged children in before and after school programs and during school holidays.

Develop daily schedules that include a balance of indoor/outdoor, active/quiet, individual, and group activities.

Monitor children's behaviour and ensure their safety and well-being.

Develop individualized and group activities based on children's interests, abilities, and support needs.

Provide behavioural intervention and support to assist children in developing physical, cognitive, emotional, and social skills.

Monitor and document children's progress, behaviours, and other relevant issues and maintain required records and statistics.

Participate in program planning, evaluation, and recommendations for improvements.

Support children with physical and personal care needs, including toileting, eating, and transferring, as required.

Maintain a healthy, safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment and identify and address potential hazards.

Administer first aid and medication in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and training.

Communicate with families regarding children's participation, development, and well-being and seek parent/guardian input into programming.

Work collaboratively with colleagues and other professionals to support children's needs and make referrals or recommendations where appropriate.

Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications/Requirements

Grade 12 or equivalent, and One (1) year Education Assistant and Community Support Worker certificate or equivalent combination of post‑secondary courses in child/adolescent development, or behaviour management including non‑violent crisis intervention techniques.

Six (6) months of recent related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Experience working with school-aged children is an asset.

Experience supporting children with diverse abilities and/or additional support needs is an asset.

Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Ability to plan and facilitate engaging, age-appropriate activities.

Ability to work collaboratively with children, families, colleagues, and community partners.

Ability to maintain confidentiality and respectful relationships with children and families.

Current First Aid certification.

The successful candidate will need to undergo a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check upon hiring.

Working Conditions

Ability to lift and move program equipment and supplies.

Ability to stand, walk, bend, crouch, and participate in activities with children for extended periods.

Ability to work in busy and active environments.

Ability to support children with physical and personal care needs, including toileting, eating, and transferring.

5 weeks (25 days) of paid vacation annually.

18 paid sick leave days per year.

All benefits are subject to funding and the terms of the Collective Agreement.
