Position Overview
As a Safety Officer, you will play a critical role in developing, implementing, and maintaining safety policies and procedures to ensure the well-being of employees, contractors, and visitors. You will conduct regular safety audits, provide training on safety best practices, and ensure compliance with occupational health and safety regulations. This position requires a proactive approach to identifying potential hazards and mitigating risks across the workplace.
You will work closely with senior leadership and department managers to promote a culture of safety throughout the organization.
What a Day Look Like As Safety Officer
- Conduct regular safety inspections and audits of facilities, equipment, and work areas to ensure compliance with safety regulations
- Develop, implement, and update safety policies and procedures in line with provincial and federal regulations
- Provide safety training and education for employees, including new hires, on workplace hazards, safety procedures, and emergency protocols
- Monitor and track workplace accidents and near-misses; investigate incidents to identify causes and recommend corrective actions
- Collaborate with management to ensure safety programs and initiatives are effectively integrated into daily operations
- Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, training sessions, and compliance reports
- Ensure that personal protective equipment (PPE) is available and properly used by all employees
- Stay updated on safety regulations and industry best practices to ensure the company maintains a safe working environment
- Promote a safety culture across the organization by encouraging employee participation in safety programs and fostering open communication on safety concerns
- Lead emergency response drills and ensure that emergency procedures are well understood by all staff
Qualifications
- Proven experience as a Safety Officer, Health & Safety Coordinator, or similar role
- In-depth knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations and standards (OSHA, ISO, etc.)
- Certification in Occupational Health and Safety is highly preferred
- Strong knowledge of risk assessment and safety audit techniques
- Ability to recognize and assess potential safety hazards and recommend corrective actions
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to train and educate staff at all levels
- Ability to handle emergency situations calmly and effectively
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to maintain accurate safety records and documentation
- Proficiency in using safety management software and Microsoft Office Suite
- First aid and CPR certification is a plus
- Experience in construction and manufacturing
- Previous experience in accident investigation and reporting
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
