Job summary

Porter Airlines Inc. is seeking a Safety Management System professional to support continual safety improvement. You will investigate hazards, incidents and audits, document evidence, and assess effectiveness of corrective actions within Porter’s SMS framework.

The role requires post-secondary education in aviation safety risk management, at least three years’ experience in an SMS environment, and the ability to obtain airport security clearance; travel may be required.

Qualifications

  • Degree or higher in aviation safety risk management or equivalent.
  • Minimum three years in SMS within a commercial airline or aircraft maintenance.
  • Experience in aviation internal auditing preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of SMS requirements and risk assessment tools.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; detail oriented.
  • Ability to obtain restricted airport security clearance and travel as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate safety hazards, incidents, and accidents; determine root causes.
  • Document evidence gathered during investigations and audits.
  • Audit effectiveness of corrective actions taken.
  • Adhere to Porter SMS and Audit Manual procedures.
  • Classify aviation safety events per standard taxonomy.
  • Maintain confidentiality of safety reporting information.
  • Participate in departmental safety meetings and SMS activities.
  • Promote the Company Safety Policy and Non-Punitive Reporting Policy.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.

Job description

Reporting to the Manager, SMS, this position supports the continuous improvement of safety at Porter Airlines by performing functions related to the Safety Management System and company audit program.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Conduct thorough investigation of reported safety hazards, incidents, and accidents; d efine contributing and root causes of aviation safety issues or audit findings using root cause analysis tools;
  • Collect, verify and record thorough documentation of all evidence gathered during investigation, analysis, or audit of safety issues;
  • Audit the effectiveness of corrective action taken to remedy safety incidents and hazards;
  • Adhere to all processes and procedures outlined in Porter’s SMS Manual and Audit Manual;
  • Participate in the classification of aviation safety events in accordance with standard industry taxonomy;
  • Maintain the confidentiality of organizational safety reporting systems and information acquired in the course of audit duties;
  • Participate in periodic departmental safety meetings;
  • Actively participate in Porter’s Safety Management System (SMS) including, reporting hazards and incidents encountered in daily operations; understanding, complying with and promoting the Company Safety Policy and Non-Punitive Reporting Policy;
  • Any other duties as assigned;

Qualifications
  • Post-secondary academic degree in aviation safety risk management;
  • A minimum of three years of working in the safety management system of a commercial airline or aircraft maintenance organization;
  • Previous qualification as an aviation internal auditor;
  • Excellent knowledge of safety management system requirements;
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience of investigation and root cause analysis tools;
  • Excellent time management, written and verbal communication skills; keen attention to detail;
  • Impartiality, integrity, tenacity, diplomacy and self-reliance are key attributes;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and internet applications;
  • Ability to secure restricted airport security clearance;
  • Must maintain a valid passport and be able to travel when required;
