Job description

Job Description

At Lakes District Maintenance, our employees are key to the success of every project, contributing to the legacy we build within the communities we serve. If you’re ready to take on a challenging, hands-on role where safety, teamwork, and growth are paramount, we encourage you to join our dynamic team. Together, we’ll continue to set the standard for excellence in construction.

Reporting to the Regional Safety Manager, the Safety Coordinator plays a key role in upholding and promoting safety across all aspects of highway maintenance operations. This position is responsible for enforcing safety standards, identifying and mitigating workplace risks, ensuring full compliance with occupational health and safety regulations, conducting hazard assessments, delivering hands-on training to crews, and implementing safety programs that drive a culture of continuous improvement.

This is a relocation-based position in Burns Lake, BC and not a camp or fly-in/fly-out role. Unlike rotational camp shifts, this role follows a Monday to Friday schedule, with occasional weekend on-call duties (with days off provided in lieu). To support relocation, accommodations will be provided for the first six months.

How You’ll Add Value

  • Actively contribute to the safety culture by participating in safety meetings, site inspections, hazard training sessions, and hazard assessments to foster a safe and productive work environment
  • Collaborate with site leadership to set and monitor safety goals, support compliance tracking, and drive continuous improvement in safety processes and performance
  • Conduct regular site audits and inspections to proactively identify and correct hazards, ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements including Safety Code (NSC) and Certificate of Recognition (COR) standards
  • Respond to incidents by facilitating investigations, collecting reports, recommending and implementing corrective actions, and managing modified work placements where necessary
  • Participate in and promote internal safety committees and initiatives, contributing to programs that raise safety awareness and enhance workplace safety
  • Prioritize and manage daily safety activities, ensuring timely communication with stakeholders and alignment with operational needs
  • Serve as a key safety representative by presenting policies, supporting pre-qualification efforts, and engaging with industry committees and external partners on safety matters
  • Develop, refine, and optimize safety procedures, checklists, documentation, and training tools to support regulatory compliance and operational readiness

What You Bring

  • 5+ years of relevant safety experience, ideally within highway maintenance or heavy civil construction environments
  • Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) designation
  • Previous experience in highway maintenance is a strong asset
  • Proficient in Microsoft D365 and other digital systems including Enterprise Resource Planning Systems (ERPs), Learning Management Systems, and Incident Tracking platforms.
  • Possession of a valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a Driver’s Abstract showing no more than 6 demerits and no major infractions required
  • A valid Class 3 Driver’s License and experience operating large vehicles is considered an asset
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across teams and with external stakeholders
  • Willingness to travel and work out of town for short, fixed-term periods, as needed
