Job Summary
PetSmart’s Process Leader (Retail Operations Manager) shares responsibility for driving operational excellence in our stores while upholding the company’s vision, mission, values, and strategy. This role is accountable for merchandising and inventory management, pet care operations, opening and/or closing the store, leading associates, financial outcomes, and maintaining a safe and organized environment.
Essential Responsibilities
Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following and may vary depending on store characteristics and needs:
People Leadership:
- Participate in employment decisions such as recruiting, interviewing, and coaching.
- Facilitate the associate experience and support associate development, including training, onboarding, reviews, labor management, mentoring, succession planning, and coaching for accountability.
- Address and administer associate complaints and grievances.
- Prioritize, delegate, and validate daily tasks for associates to meet business and pet parent needs.
- Lead and coach associates on operational processes to ensure pets in our care are safe and healthy.
- Coordinate staffing coverage for key store activities.
- Validate completion of operational messages and engagement video compliance.
- Communicate company information and priorities to associates to ensure alignment.
- Recognize and celebrate associates to drive engagement.
Overall Store Experience:
- Oversee the healthcare of store-owned pets, including maintenance, feeding, watering, cleaning, and care for sick pets.
- Manage inventory processes, including accuracy, receiving, stocking, counts, product rotations, and planogram sets.
- Seek continuous improvement opportunities in store experiences and services.
- Maintain vendor relationships, backroom standards, and communication boards.
- Oversee Buy Online and Pick Up In Store and Ship From Store programs.
- Analyze sales trends and merchandising activities for growth opportunities.
- Make merchandising decisions regarding space and discontinued products.
- Maintain store standards and ensure compliance with policies and safety regulations.
- Ensure a safe environment for associates, pets, and pet parents.
- Respond promptly to pet health concerns and pet parent issues.
Expense Management:
- Identify growth opportunities and manage store P&L, including sales, shrink, and expenses.
- Analyze inventory reports to identify trends and opportunities.
- Manage expenses related to labor and supplies.
- Coordinate with Home Office partners on work orders and purchase allocations.
Qualifications:
- 3+ years of retail leadership or experience in a customer-focused environment.
- Full-time availability, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Proficiency in computer applications.
- Strong communication skills.
- Ability to react under pressure and maintain composure.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Supervisory Responsibility:
- Supervise up to 3 lead associates and 40 non-leader associates.
- Make employment decisions and support associate development.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- Require standing, walking, climbing, and handling objects; ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Exposure to pet hair, live animals, and moderate noise levels.
