Job summary

Dalhousie University in Halifax seeks a Research Technician to manage the shared marine biogeochemistry laboratory, overseeing operations, instrument calibration, health and safety, and training colleagues while supporting a diverse portfolio of projects.

Qualifications

  • Experience with laboratory safety standards and compliance.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Have the physical stamina to conduct work at sea (e.g., stand for long periods on a moving deck; lift ~20 kg).

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the day-to-day operations of a shared research laboratory, ensuring efficient workflows, organization, and compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage laboratory resources, including inventory, procurement, equipment maintenance, servicing coordination, and shared equipment scheduling.
  • Support research activities through experimental setup, data collection and management, fieldwork participation, and assistance with multiple concurrent projects.
  • Train and onboard students, staff, and visitors on laboratory techniques, instrumentation, safety procedures, and best practices.
  • Provide administrative support by managing budgets, purchases, expense tracking, compliance documentation, and grant-related reporting requirements.
  • Foster collaboration across research groups by serving as a central point of contact, promoting effective communication, equitable use of shared resources, and a positive laboratory culture.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Principal Investigators, the Research Technician will manage the shared marine biogeochemistry laboratory of the Principal Investigators. Responsibilities include laboratory operations and inventory management, maintenance and calibration of scientific instrumentation, health and safety compliance, training colleagues , conducting field sampling, and performing chemical and biogeochemical analyses of environmental samples. The position plays a key role in supporting a diverse portfolio of marine research projects and ensuring the smooth operation of the laboratory.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage laboratory resources, including inventory, procurement, equipment maintenance, servicing coordination, and shared equipment scheduling.

Note

Incumbent must have a valid driver’s license and passport and be able to travel internationally.

Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.

Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant scientific field (e.g., oceanography, geology, biology, chemistry or related discipline)
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with laboratory safety standards and compliance.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Have the physical stamina to conduct work at sea (e.g., stand for long periods of time on a moving deck to potentially adverse weather conditions, be able to lift and carry loads of approximately 20 kgs multiple times in a working day).
Assets
  • Master’s field in a relevant field.
  • Analytical chemistry experience.
  • Prior experience in a lab manager or supervisory role.
  • Experience with budgeting, ordering systems, and inventory software.
  • Experience supporting multiple research groups or shared facilities.
  • Prior sea going experience.
