Job description

Join a dynamic, world-class research team led by Dr. Michael Levin, the Saskatchewan Multiple Sclerosis Clinical Research Chair.

Our team focuses on neurodegeneration, studying neuron death and damage as major causes of disability in MS and other neurological diseases. We utilize computer modeling, molecular, and imaging technologies to develop small molecules that inhibit neurodegeneration and promote neuroprotection in vitro and in small animal models.

We seek a research assistant with a strong background in molecular neurobiology, experience with primary mouse neurons, human IPSCs, small animal handling, and molecular biology techniques (RNA/DNA isolation, RNAseq, AAVs, single-cell isolation and sequencing). The role involves testing small molecules for potential clinical trials. Led by Dr. Levin, you can learn more about our work via our TED Talk, lab website, and recent publications linked in the original description.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Design, conduct, and support research on MS and neurological diseases, including neuroimmunology, neuroscience, immunology, molecular biology, bioinformatics, and biostatistics.
  2. Report regularly to the SK MS Research Chair, plan projects, and meet deadlines.
  3. Document experiments, analyze data, and contribute to scientific publications.
  4. Train and supervise trainees at all levels.
  5. Assist in grant writing and manuscript preparation.
Typical Duties:
  1. Perform and optimize in vitro experiments with cell lines, primary neurons, and human IPSCs.
  2. Maintain detailed laboratory notebooks.
  3. Transfect and transduce cell lines and primary neurons.
  4. Conduct in vivo experiments using mouse and rat models of MS.
  5. Work with human tissue samples using immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence.
  6. Develop and improve experimental protocols.
  7. Present findings at meetings and assist with publications.
  8. Train and mentor trainees, establish SOPs.
Qualifications:
  • Graduate degree (PhD preferred, MSc acceptable) in molecular biology, neuroscience, or related field with 3-5 years of experience.
  • Experience with mouse models, cell culture, imaging, protein analysis, PCR/qPCR, molecular cloning, sequencing, and human tissue analysis.
  • Proficiency in bioinformatics and data analysis software.
  • Experience mentoring junior researchers and a proven publication record.
Skills:
  • Immunohistochemistry, microscopy, molecular techniques.
  • Small animal procedures.
  • Computer skills including bioinformatics and statistical software.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
Details:

Department: Medicine
Status: Term, 1-year
FTE: 1.0
Salary: $65,975–$102,024/year, commensurate with experience.
Location: On campus, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.
