Job description

OVERVIEW

Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) possess a defined body of knowledge, clinical skills, procedural skills, and professional attitudes, all aimed at providing effective patient and family-centered care. RPNs apply these competencies to collect and interpret information, make appropriate clinical decisions, and carry out therapeutic nursing interventions. In collaboration with Registered Nurses, RPNs operate within the boundaries of their knowledge, skills, judgment, personal expertise, the healthcare setting, and patient preferences.

The RPN in the Nursing Resource Team must have a broad range of nursing skills related to general medical-surgical nursing. The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent critical thinking skills and adaptability to unpredictable situations. To meet organizational needs, cross-training in specialty areas may be required. This position involves working in clinical areas across Michael Garron Hospital, including off-site clinical settings as needed.

EDUCATION

  • Registered Practical Nursing diploma with current registration issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Current Medication Administration certificate (required).
  • Maintain competence relevant to current practice.
  • Recent experience and ongoing education in medical-surgical nursing are assets.
  • Current BLS certification required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Willingness to float to all health services within the organization, including off-site settings.
  • At least 1 year of recent medical-surgical experience.
  • Competence in feeding pumps, G-feeds, oxygen administration, sterile dressings, and intermittent catheterization.
  • Ability to perform pain and symptom assessments.
  • Knowledge of PCA is an asset.
  • Motivated for ongoing educational development.
  • Excellent observational skills.
  • Commitment to patient-focused care.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Previous pediatric experience is an asset.
  • Superior organizational skills.
  • Experience in long-term care or chronic care settings with palliative or respiratory populations is an asset.
  • Good work and attendance record required.
