Job description

OVERVIEW

Registered Practical Nurses possess a defined body of knowledge, clinical skills, procedural skills, and professional attitudes, which are directed to effective patient and family-centered care. RPNs apply these competencies to collect and interpret information, make appropriate nursing clinical decisions, and carry out therapeutic nursing interventions. In collaboration with the Registered Nurse, RPNs apply these competencies within the boundaries of their knowledge, skill and judgment, personal expertise, the healthcare setting, and the patient's preferences.

The RPN in the Nursing Resource Team must have a wide range of nursing skills related to general medical-surgical nursing. The RPN must have excellent critical thinking skills and the ability to adapt to unpredictable situations. In order to serve the wide organizational needs, the RPN must be willing to cross-train to specialty areas as required. This position will work in clinical areas across Michael Garron Hospital, including off-site clinical settings as required.

EDUCATION

  1. Registered Practical Nursing diploma with a current certificate of registration issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  2. Current Medication Administration certificate (for RPN).
  3. Maintains competence relative to current practice.
  4. Recent experience and evidence of recent related continuing education in medical-surgical nursing is an asset.
  5. Current BLS required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Must be prepared to float to all Health Services within the organization, including off-site clinical settings.
  2. 1 year of recent medical/surgical experience.
  3. Maintains competence relative to current practices.
  4. Familiar with feeding pumps, G-feeds, oxygen administration, simple sterile dressings, and intermittent catheterization.
  5. Pain/symptom assessment.
  6. Knowledge of PCA is an asset.
  7. Motivated to pursue educational goals.
  8. Demonstrates excellent observational skills.
  9. Demonstrates excellence in providing patient-focused care.
  10. Excellent interpersonal/communication skills.
  11. Previous pediatric experience is an asset.
  12. Demonstrates superior organizational skills.
  13. Experience in LTC/chronic care setting with palliative/respiratory populations is an asset.
  14. Good work and attendance record required.

  1. Demonstrated clinical knowledge and experience in the implementation of high-quality clinical care utilizing the nursing process.
  2. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues utilizing well-developed (clear, concise, and accurate) verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
  3. Demonstrated organizational skills and problem-solving abilities to ensure effective, efficient, and appropriate decision making when planning and implementing health care.
  4. Commitment to maintaining professional development of self and others with a patient safety focus.
