Job summary

The Ottawa Hospital is seeking perioperative nursing staff to join our OR teams across multiple shifts. Responsibilities include delivering perioperative care, collaborating with scrub and circulating nurses, and ensuring aseptic technique and patient safety in a dynamic operating room environment.

Required are Ontario nursing registration, OR experience, BCLS, and a commitment to continuous education and quality improvement. This role supports our mission of world-class care and compassion.

Qualifications

  • Certificate of registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Perioperative Nursing Certificate (or OR Technician course) with recent OR experience.
  • Minimum three months nursing experience.
  • Current BCLS.
  • Knowledge of AIDET and clinical tactics.
  • Knowledge of operating room nursing principles and aseptic technique.
  • Ability to work as a team in a precise, quick-response environment.
  • Commitment to continuing education and self-evaluation.
  • Ability to participate in patient teaching and QA activities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide perioperative nursing care in a fast-paced operating room setting.
  • Collaborate with OR team to ensure patient safety and comfort.
  • Maintain aseptic technique and manage OR equipment as required.
  • Contribute to continuous education and quality assurance activities.

Rotation/Shifts

Days, evenings and nights, including weekends, 8 hour shifts (07:15-15:15, 07:30-15:30, 10:00-18:00, 15:15-23:15, 23:15-07:15). Stand by - 30 minutes return time to the O.R.

Basic Requirements
  • Certificate of registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario;
  • Perioperative Nursing Certificate (or equivalent course) OR Operating Room Technician course (or equivalent course) with recent operating room experience (within the last 6-months);
  • Minimum three (3) months recent nursing experience;
  • Current BCLS;
  • Demonstrated ability with and knowledge of AIDET and other clinical tactics;
  • Demonstrates knowledge of operating room nursing principles and practice, and knowledge of basic operating room equipment;
  • Demonstrates an understanding of aseptic technique and an ability to apply this knowledge in a clinical setting;
  • Ability to function effectively as a team member in a work environment requiring precision, accuracy, quick response and collaborative approaches;
  • Demonstrates the ability to acquire additional skills to function effectively in an operating room nursing role;
  • Identifies a personal commitment to continuing education;
  • Demonstrates the ability to participate in self-evaluation;
  • Demonstrates a desire and ability to participate in patient teaching;
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the application and relevance of the Quality Assurance Program and participates in unit activities;
  • Able to perform all tasks related to this position;
  • Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively in an oral and written format with the patients, public, colleagues and other health disciplines;
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada;
