Job summary

Northern Health is seeking a Perioperative Assistant in the Operating Room environment. You will support nursing and technical staff by preparing patients, assisting with positioning, mobilization, lifting and transferring of patients, and ensuring OR equipment and supplies are ready for procedures.

Must have current registration with the BC Care Aide Registry to qualify. The role involves transporting patients and maintaining operating room carts and storage areas as needed.

Responsibilities

• Assist in preparing patients for surgical procedures.
• Assist nursing/technical staff by supporting positioning of patients as required.
• Assist the patient care team with mobilization, lifting and transferring of patients on/off beds, stretchers and wheelchairs using prescribed safe techniques.
• Transport/escort patients to/from required areas using stretchers and wheelchairs.
• Ensure operating room equipment and supplies are available and organized.
• Distribute materials, equipment and linen related to the operating rooms as required.

In accordance with the established mission, vision, values, and strategic priorities of Northern Health, and under the general supervision of Manager or designate, the Perioperative Assistant works as a member of an integrated team to support nursing/technical staff within the Operating Room / OR environment. Provides appropriate basic nursing care and support to patients including assisting in preparing patients for surgical procedures, assisting nursing and technical staff by supporting positioning of patients as required; assisting the patient care team with mobilization, lifting and transferring of patients on/off beds, stretchers and wheelchairs utilizing prescribed safe techniques and lifting practices; ensuring overall equipment and supplies for the operating rooms are available; assisting with the changeover of the operating room (s) between operative procedures. Transports/escorts patients to/from required areas using stretchers and wheelchairs, ensures general equipment and supplies for operating rooms are available, cleans the equipment and supply areas; maintains supplies for the operating room carts and storage areas. Distributes materials, equipment and linen related to the operating rooms as required.
