Job Description
  • Transport tools and equipment on push or hand car and perform other duties to assist railway track maintenance workers to lay, maintain and repair railway tracks
  • Cut vegetation growth from railway tracks using scythes and mowers
  • Check freight cars for physical damage and cleanliness
  • Assist truck and delivery drivers to load and unloading vehicles
  • Perform laboring duties in warehouses
  • Confirm that passenger and freight trains run on schedule and travel safely, drive trains, coordinate train activities and operate signals and switches in the rail yard
  • Replace, remove and repair tracks as well as related components
  • Check the mechanical condition of locomotives and make adjustments when necessary
  • Align and slide track tie plates and cut rails to specified lengths
  • Document issues with a train that require further inspection
  • Handle drilling activities for insertion of bolts or joints
  • Operate locomotive engines within or between stations
  • Perform authorized repairs and document outcomes of all repair activities
  • Operate picks, shovels, bulldozers, and spike driving machines to perform maintenance and repair work on rails
  • Coordinate transportation activities in order to expedite the movement of cars and trains
