Job Description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. Continuous improvement of quality and safety is inherent in this position.

Reporting to the Population and Public Health (PPH) Manager or designate, and working in the community setting, the Public Health Dietitian uses a population health approach to assess, promote, protect, and enhance health and prevent nutrition-related diseases.

Travel is required for this position. Transportation arrangements must meet the operational requirements of the Vancouver Island Health Authority and may require the use of a personal vehicle.

Qualifications
Education, Training, and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Food Sciences, Nutrition, and/or Dietetics.
  • Registered Dietitian (RD) designation with current practicing registration.
  • Two years of relevant experience in community development, health promotion, nutrition education, project management, and interdisciplinary partnering.
  • Valid BC Driver's License.
Skills and Abilities
  • Understanding of health promotion principles and values, including healthy public policy, supportive environments, community action, personal skills development, and health service reorientation.
  • Knowledge of food security, food systems, and sustainable food practices related to population health.
  • Understanding of policy development in Canada related to food and nutrition.
  • Knowledge of food and nutrition surveillance and monitoring for planning, policy analysis, program evaluation, advocacy, and research.
  • Understanding of partnership, collaboration, and community development processes.
  • Ability to enable, mediate, and advocate for health and wellbeing through food and nutrition strategies.
  • Competence in public speaking, facilitation, collaboration, and advocacy.
  • Awareness of social determinants of health and their impact on health outcomes.
  • Ability to work with cultural safety and trauma-informed practices.
  • Ability to work independently with initiative and limited supervision, maintaining collaborative relationships with community stakeholders.
  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team using interpersonal and team skills.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with healthcare and community partners.
  • Knowledge and application of client-centered dietetics practices in public health settings.
  • Proficiency in computer use and software applications.
  • Physical and emotional capacity to perform the duties of the position.
