Planning & Design is seeking a skilled and motivated Systems Technician for a 12-month term.
WAGE: $ 49.59 /hr
HOURS: Monday to Friday - 37.5 hrs/week
Reporting to the Building Inspections Manager, the Planning & Design Systems Technician will utilize analytical and technical expertise to configure and support department software – applications/technologies related to online permitting, digital plan review, mobile inspections, printed & website content, and related components of the department’s municipal software suite.
The Technician will support internal staff, citizens, and the construction industry by employing a diverse skillset of business process, workflow, municipal legislation, and technical knowledge. Duties will include system configuration, modification & improvement of existing processes, ensuring data integrity, and working with other system experts to ensure inter-related applications and systems function according to corporate and public user requirements.
This role will also develop and implement communications strategies and initiatives that support Planning & Design department goals. The successful candidate will work closely with content specialists in Building Inspections, Development, and Planning to create communications material regarding complex and technical subjects which are approachable for the public. Work will include data gathering, research, customer assistance & outreach, graphic design, content authoring, website content management, and other related duties.
This role will be primarily performed on-site while onboarding, with the potential to transition towards a hybrid work schedule.
Responsibilities
- Plan, recommend, design, configure, and implement business processes enhancements to the online permitting system & municipal software which meets the evolving needs of external customers, changing legislation, and department practices.
- Provide technical support to internal staff, citizens, and the construction industry regarding the online permitting system and related applications.
- Coordinate system maintenance, upgrades, and new initiatives between Planning & Design, affected departments, and public stakeholders.
- Act as technical liaison between Planning & Design and Corporate Information Technology staff - establish, foster, and maintain cohesive, complimentary, and effective communications & relationships.
- Leverage knowledge of Planning & Design workflows, processes, and system configuration to liaise with corporate data analysts to facilitate requests for metrics & analytics.
- Develop a strategy for department content on the City’s public website and implement changes through the content management system.
- Create and distribute clear, concise, and engaging communications materials - including newsletters, website content, user guides, and other materials.
- Manage and maintain strong positive relationships with internal departments, community partners, and stakeholders who utilize the municipal software, related systems, and its data.

- Proficient writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with the ability to tailor messaging to different audiences and channels - including producing technical documentation and presentations.
- Proficiency in digital communications tools, including email marketing software, and content management systems.
- Proficiency in graphic design, with the ability to use it to enhance the aesthetics and effectiveness of communications materials.
- Proficient with website layout and best practices for structuring customer accessible interfaces and presenting complex information in a user-friendly and esthetic manner.
- Excellent project management and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team - prioritizing and managing multiple projects and deadlines.
- A professional attitude with the ability to remain calm in stressful and demanding situations.
Qualifications
- A minimum of a two year Diploma in Information Technology (or related) from a recognized institution, and a minimum of two years of work experience in a related field.
- Preference for candidates with experience in a related position, preferably in government or the public sector.
- A combination of education and experience may also be considered.
