Job summary

Columbia Shuswap Regional District in Salmon Arm, BC is seeking a permanent full-time Plan Checker I to join the Building and Bylaw Services team. You will coordinate and examine plans for compliance with the BC Building Code and CSRD bylaws, and assist applicants throughout the permitting process.

The role requires Grade 12 plus a Building Technology Diploma, minimum two years construction experience and one year in a local government setting, plus Level 1 Building exams and a valid BC driver's

Qualifications

• Grade 12 or equivalent supplemented by a Diploma in Building Technology or a related discipline from a recognized post-secondary institution.
• Two years of construction experience, preferably in carpentry or mechanical trades, and one year relevant experience, preferably in a local government building department.
• Successful completion of the Qualified Level 1 Building exams.
• Valid BC Driver's License.
• An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and examine plans and specifications accompanying building permit applications to ensure compliance with the BC Building Code, CSRD Building Bylaw, and other applicable bylaws.
• Provide a high level of customer service and work closely with Development Services staff.
• Review building applications and inspections; advise external clients on CSRD Building Bylaw, Part 9 of the BC Building Code, and the Building Act.

Position Overview The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) is now accepting applications for a permanent full-time Plan Checker I based out of Salmon Arm, BC. Under the general direction of the Manager, Building and Bylaw Services, the Plan Checker I is responsible for the coordination and examination of plans and specifications accompanying building inspection and permit applications to ensure compliance with the BC Building Code, CSRD Building Bylaw, and other applicable bylaws. The Plan Checker I works closely with Development Services staff and provides a high level of customer service. This position is responsible for the efficient review of building applications and inspections which involves examining plans and drawings, as well as providing advice and direction to external clients regarding the CSRD Building Bylaw, Part 9 of the BC Building Code, and the Building Act.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 or equivalent supplemented by a Diploma in Building Technology or a related discipline from a recognized post-secondary institution
• A minimum of two (2) years of experience working in the field of construction, preferably in carpentry or mechanical trades, and one (1) year relevant experience, preferably in a local government building department
• Successful completion of the Qualified Level 1 Building exams.
• Valid BC Driver's License.

Compensation Position Type CUPE Local 1908, permanent full-time (35 hour work week) Salary Range $2,935.38 to $3,243.51 bi-weekly (January 2026 rates) Benefits Package Employer-paid benefits package with immediate coverage, an earned day-off program, paid vacation, a boot allowance, and ongoing training and development opportunities. Hours of Work Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
