Job summary

Capstan Hauling, part of the LAPRAIRIE Group, is hiring a Picker/Rigger to join its Grande Prairie operations. The role involves coordinating with pickers, winches, and bed trucks to move loads safely and efficiently.

You will select appropriate rigging gear, test equipment, and assist in maneuvering oversized loads while maintaining high safety standards on job sites in Grande Prairie, Alberta.

Qualifications

  • Willingness to work rotating day and night shifts.
  • Experience with picking and bed trucks is an asset.
  • Experience using OHS hand signals for crane spotting.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Work with Picker, Winch and Bed trucks.
  • Directly signal or verbal instruction to workers to move loads safely.
  • Test rigging for safety and reliability.
  • Select gear (cables, pulleys, winches) according to loads and schedules.
  • Maneuver loads using multi-point suspension techniques.
  • Install ground rigging for yarding lines and attach chokers to logs.
  • Align, level, and anchor machinery on site.
  • Attach loads to rigging for moving and support.
  • Fabricate and repair rigging, hoists, and gear as needed.
  • Move materials with rigging lines, hoists, and pulling gear.
  • Inspect equipment before and after trips (Jack & Slide).
  • Operate skid steers (CAT and John Deere).
  • Load and unload trucks and trailers.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Job description

CAPSTAN Hauling, a diversified, trucking company (a member of LAPRAIRIE Group of Companies) is recruiting for a Picker/ Rigger to join its growing, logistics team in Grande Prairie, Alberta.

Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Work with Picker, Winch and Bed trucks.
  • Signal or verbally direct workers engaged in hoisting and moving loads, in order to ensure safety of workers and materials.
  • Test rigging to ensure safety and reliability.
  • Select gear such as cables, pulleys, and winches, according to load weights and sizes, facilities, and work schedules.
  • Tilt, dip, and turn suspended loads to maneuver over, under, and/or around obstacles, using multi-point suspension techniques.
  • Install ground rigging for yarding lines, attaching chokers to logs and then to the lines.
  • Align, level, and anchor machinery.
  • Attach loads to rigging to provide support or prepare them for moving, using hand and power tools.
  • Fabricate, set up, and repair rigging, supporting structures, hoists, and pulling gear, using hand and power tools.
  • Manipulate rigging lines, hoists, and pulling gear to move or support materials such as heavy equipment, ships, or theatrical sets.
  • Clean and dress machine surfaces and component parts. Wash equipment as requested by Supervisor.
  • Perform pre and post trip inspections on Jack & Slide Equipment.
  • Perform pilot operation for oversize loads.
  • Attach pulleys and blocks to fixed overhead structures such as beams, ceilings, and gin pole booms, using bolts and clamps.
  • Operate CAT and John Deere skid steers.
  • Load and unload trucks and trailers.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Desired Skills and Experience:
  • Availability to work rotational shifts, including days and nights.
  • Able to run 45 tonnes/swing cab.
  • Previous Picker and Bed Truck experience is considered an asset.
  • Experienced in using OHS hand signals for spotting mobile cranes and mobile equipment.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol clearance.
  • Solid communication skills.
  • Ability to navigate work sites and adapt to daily changes in scopes of work.
  • Acceptable drivers abstract.
