Job summary

YMCA of southeastern Alberta is seeking a dedicated Personal Trainer/Group Fitness Instructor in Medicine Hat. The role involves teaching a range of group fitness classes, delivering personalized coaching, and upholding YMCA values while helping members reach health goals.

Reporting to the Fitness Manager, you will engage with members, maintain program quality, and assist with off-site classes and events. Strong communication and flexibility to work days, evenings, and weekends are required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor in Physical Education, Kinesiology or related degree preferred
  • Evidence of a clear Police Information Check (within last six months)
  • Valid driver’s license with Class 07 automobile insurance coverage (business use) and $2,000,000 liability
  • Additional third party group fitness program certifications are assets (TRX, Zumba, MOSSA, Les Mills)
  • Personal Training certification is an asset (CanFit Pro, NASM, AFLCA)

Responsibilities

  • Provide exceptional customer service while teaching a variety of fitness classes to all members
  • Help members achieve personal health and fitness goals through education and guided programs
  • Deliver quality fitness programming and maintain YMCA values
  • Assist in off-site fitness programming and special events coverage
  • Aid in the training of new fitness staff and volunteers
  • Work collaboratively within the HFA team to ensure program success
  • Maintain accurate fitness paperwork and participant records

Personal Trainer/Group Fitness Instructor

Position Title: Personal Trainer/Group Fitness Instructor

Reports To: Fitness Manager

Pay Grid: $20/hour

Department: Health, Fitness, and Aquatics

Hours: 40 hours/week

What qualifications are we looking for?

The successful candidate will have the following:

Education/Certifications/Credentials/Professional Registration

  • Additional certification through third party group fitness programs is an asset. These programs include, but are not limited to, the following: TRX, Zumba, MOSSA, Les Mills, etc.
  • Personal Training certification is an asset. This includes, but is not limited to, CanFit Pro, CSEP, NASM, AFLCA, etc.
  • Bachelor of Physical Education, Kinesiology or related degree preferred
  • Evidence of a clear Police Information Check (with Vulnerable Sector Search if applicable), within the last six months
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with a class 07 automobile insurance coverage business use (or pleasure with occasional business use) and a minimum of $2,000,000 in liability coverage

Knowledge & Skills

  • Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members, staff and volunteers
  • Knowledge of physical fitness normally acquired through completion of courses in physical education or a related field and/or previous experience
  • Previous experience in developing individual fitness programs and coaching individuals to achieve results
  • Ability to act professionally in all situations, representing the YMCA according to its core values
  • Ability to instruct various group fitness classes is an asset
  • Excellent communication, organization, and time management skills
  • Flexibility regarding schedule, including days, evenings and weekends
  • Ability to deliver quality fitness programming at off-site locations
What does this role look like at the YMCA of southeastern Alberta?

Reporting to the Fitness Manager the Group Fitness Instructor is responsible for providing exceptional customer service while teaching a variety of fitness classes to all people or persons that access the YMCA facility while demonstrating all YMCA values and helping members to achieve their personal health and fitness goals.

The responsibilities and duties of this role will include but is not limited to:

Customer Service

  • Be committed to exceptional customer service and member engagement
  • Have positive interactions with members throughout the building; never just walk by a member
  • Identify and create opportunities to enhance each and every person’s YMCA experience
  • Provides direct delivery in the individual conditioning area with a focus on building and facilitating member relationships
  • Assists members to achieve their personal health and fitness related goals through education and suggested exercise programs, while building positive relationships

  • Communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, managers, and the senior leadership team
  • Ensure workplace conflicts are resolved quickly, following YMCA policies and procedures
  • Communicate a large quantity of information clearly and concisely in person and over the telephone by understanding the organizational structure of the YMCA

Quality of Work

  • Complete all fitness program related duties with accuracy in our Avocado system
  • Participates regularly in educational seminars/workshops to increase knowledge pertaining to the fitness and health industry
  • Maintain and complete fitness paperwork, spreadsheets, emails and any other administrative work as needed
  • Host scheduled group fitness classes which include, but are not limited to, the following: bootcamp, spin classes, aquafit classes, gold fit classes, and chair fit classes. Additional classes through third party programming where certification is attained (i.e. Zumba, TRX, Mossa, etc.)
  • Ensures outstanding programs and service are provided in a warm, friendly, clean, and safe environment.
  • Candidates must be able to work days, evenings and weekends

Compliance with Legislation and YMCA Policies and Procedure

  • Adherence to the following at all times:

  • Public health and safety regulations
  • Occupational Health and Safety

Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • Work in a loud, noisy environment
  • May be going from standing to sitting positions, standing to kneeling positions, from kneeling to standing positions, from sitting to standing for most of the working day.
  • Walking throughout the day.
  • Walking up and down stairs
  • May lift or move items up to 50 lbs including children
  • Working on a computer screen, computer keyboard, and mouse
  • May be exposed to children or adults who may not be vaccinated
  • May be exposed to verbal/physical abuse from external and internal clients
