Job summary

YMCA of southeastern Alberta in Medicine Hat invites applications for a Career and Employment Advisor. You will support job seekers to gain workplace skills, reconnection to the workforce, and tailored employability guidance in a community-focused environment.

Reporting to the Employment Centre Manager, you will build employer relationships, assist with resume development, and provide coaching and workshops while upholding YMCA values and standards.

Qualifications

• University degree or diploma in Human Services/HR/Social Sciences and/or Business.
• Evidence of a clear Police Information Check within the last six months.
• Must have auto insurance coverage for business use with at least $2,000,000 liability.

Responsibilities

• Assist participants with resume development, job search strategies, interview skills, training opportunities, career planning and labor market information.
• Initiate and maintain employer contacts by marketing YMCA programs.
• Negotiate job placements and work experiences for clients with local employers.
• Respond to phone calls and emails within 24 business hours.
• Greet customers and program participants professionally and courteously.
• Provide ongoing coaching one-on-one for clients re: workforce connection.
• Conduct assessments to identify interests, skills and abilities and relate to the workforce.
• Assist clients in addressing barriers to employment and follow up services.

The successful candidate will have the following:

Education/Certifications/Credentials/Professional Registration

• University Degree or Diploma in Human Services/ HR/Social Sciences and/or Business
• Evidence of a clear Police Information Check (with Vulnerable Sector Search if applicable), within the last six months
• Must have class 07 automobile insurance coverage business use (or pleasure with occasional business use) and a minimum of $2,000,000 in liability coverage

Knowledge & Skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook
• Knowledge of employment, education, and training strategies, local labour market information and community resources
• Exceptional customer service attitude and skills

What does this role look like at the YMCA of southeastern Alberta?

Reporting to the Employment Centre Manager, the Career and Employment Advisor will assist individuals in providing comprehensive and individualized services that enable job seekers to acquire workplace and occupational skills allowing them to re-enter the workforce as quickly as possible.

The responsibilities and duties of this role will include but is not limited to:

Customer Service

• Assist participants with resume development, job search strategies, interview skills, training opportunities, career planning, employability skills and labour market information
• Initiate, develop and maintain employer contacts by marketing our programs
• Negotiate job placements and work experience opportunities for clients with employers in Medicine Hat
• Respond to phone calls/emails within 24 business hours
• Greet customers/program participants professionally and courteously

• Initiate, develop and maintain employer contacts by marketing our programs – the position will entail initiating and meeting with local businesses/employers to promote our clients and available services
• Negotiate job placements and work experience opportunities for clients with employers
• Provide ongoing coaching on a one‑on‑one basis for individuals connecting to the workforce
• Conduct a thorough assessment to help clients identify their interests, skills, and abilities, and relate them to the workforce
• Assist clients in identifying and addressing barriers to employment
• Conduct follow-up services with clients
• Facilitate life management and employability workshops
• Conduct data entry into the Mobius tracking system

Compliance with Legislation and YMCA Policies and Procedure

• Ensure all YMCA policies/procedures and applicable legislation is followed
• Compliance with funding contracts, including meeting targets/outcomes, reporting, confidentiality, etc.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

• Office located on the main floor.
• Sitting at a desk and using a computer for most of the day
• From time to time, may need to lift boxes of files weighing up to 20 lbs
• May be exposed to all weather conditions when walking outside to/from vehicle.
• May be exposed to all weather conditions when using vehicle for occasional business purposes (e.g., going to an employer meeting).
