Paramedical Lead & National Team Physiotherapist—Team Canada Women’s Sitting
Supervisors: Team Canada Women’s Sitting Volleyball IST Lead and High-Performance Director – Para Volleyball (HPD – Para Volleyball).
Location: Based out of Alberta with ability to travel extensively with the team throughout the year.
Position Type: Honorarium-based contractor.
Overview
The Paramedical Lead and National Team Physiotherapist, reporting to the Integrated Service Team (IST) Lead and High-Performance Director (HPD), is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the paramedical team to ensure athletes receive optimized proactive, reactive and court-side medical treatment and care.
Responsibilities
- Provide the initial “go-to contact” for coordination and treatment of all medical and rehab care of the athletes and work in close collaboration with the team physician, IST team, coaches and other members of the medical group.
- Provide medical treatment of injured athletes, consulting and collaborating with the IST team as well as athletes’ home therapists and service providers in their regional centres.
- Provide professional physiotherapy treatments, proactive programming and implementation and/or rehabilitation therapy at training or camp venues (approximately 20 hours per month).
- Travel to camps and competitions (approximately 60 days throughout a calendar year). This could include training camps, friendly tournaments or World ParaVolley sanctioned events.
Specific Functions for Paramedical Lead
- Attend all IST meetings with coaches, HPD and IST. Provide injury updates as requested.
- Develop/recommend communication protocols for all sport therapy providers, covering off-season, pre-season, in-season.
- Coordinate and/or provide injury prevention strategies for both off-season and in-season training for identified athletes.
- Maintain and facilitate close communication with relevant physicians, medical, and strength and conditioning staff regarding athlete injury and rehab status.
- Athlete status updates to be communicated to appropriate physicians, head coaches, appropriate regional coaches, and other involved service providers.
- In conjunction with the CSI/NSO Team Physician, arrange consultation and ensure regular communication with appropriate physicians or other health practitioners across Canada or abroad when athletes require medical care outside of the defined medical group.
- Ensure all relevant medical files are obtained and stored electronically from all athlete physician encounters, physiotherapy treatments notes, surgical reports, DI reports, etc. All relevant information to be inputted into the athlete management system.
- In collaboration with the IST Lead, develop injury surveillance and tracking protocols using the athlete management system.
- Monitor weekly and daily in-competition athlete monitoring data and provide follow-up communication with the athlete if an injury or health concern is flagged.
- Support athletes in coordinating TUE applications as required.
- Lead the classification process for new athletes or athletes requiring review classifications, including primary assessments and coordination with Team Physicians for completion of Medical Diagnostic Forms.
- Manage athlete classification with World ParaVolley as the primary team contact in the PVSAS registration system.
- Organize, maintain and order medical supplies for traveling therapists (as required).
- In collaboration with the IST Lead, organize schedule paramedical coverage for all athlete training camps and competition events.
- Contribute and provide physiotherapy expertise to the development of the periodized yearly training plan (YTP), in collaboration with the Head Coach and IST Lead to consider key competition dates.
- Lead debrief meetings with sport therapy staff following training camps or competition events.
- Develop and implement an evidence-based athlete musculoskeletal assessment to inform injury prevention programs and S&C programming decisions.
- Attend annual Volleyball Canada IST Meetings to discuss strategies with other staff from Beach, Indoor and Men’s Sitting Programs.
- Review paramedical strategy and responsibilities yearly with HPD and IST Lead for annual Own the Podium review.
Qualifications and Skills
- A passion for sport and previous experience working in a high performance or elite sport environment.
- Licensed to practice physiotherapy in the Province of Alberta and a member in good standing with the governing professional organization.
- Knowledge of the latest methods of injury management and prevention for elite athletes.
- Experience in elite amateur (and/or professional) therapy care including competition and international travel.
- Appreciation of issues and practices related to the World Anti-Doping Association and the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport.
- Certification as Sport First Responder.
- Successful completion of Criminal Record Check and Volleyball Canada Background Screen.
Preferred Assets
- Certification in Acupuncture or Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) techniques.
- Certification or competence in provision of manual therapy techniques.
- Bilingualism (English and French).
- Experience working with para-athletes or with Paralympic programs.
- Knowledge of the Canadian Sport System.
- Sport Physiotherapy Canada Certificate and/or Diploma (or working towards this designation).

COMPENSATION:
- $1000 per month honorarium for administration and medical coordination
- $300 per day honorarium for Training Camp and Competition support, schedule as agreed upon in advance by Volleyball Canada and the contractor.
