Job summary

The Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) in Edmonton is seeking a Paralegal to provide substantive legal and procedural support on complex prosecution files. You will perform legal research, case management, and stakeholder coordination to advance criminal prosecutions and help delivering justice.

Qualifications

  • 4 years of progressively responsible related experience as a Legal Assistant or a Paralegal in specialized prosecutions or criminal law experience.
  • Strong knowledge of legal processes and foundation of legal assistant experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint) and legal software.
  • Licensing: Alberta Motor Vehicle Operators License or equivalent.

Join the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) and work alongside Crown Prosecutors to support the fair and effective administration of justice. In this role, you'll make a tangible difference in communities across Alberta while advancing some of the province's most significant criminal cases.

As a Paralegal, you will provide substantive legal and procedural support on complex prosecution files. Through legal research, case management, stakeholder coordination, and courtroom support, you will help advance criminal prosecutions and contribute to the successful delivery of justice.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Managing complex prosecution files in compliance with legislation, regulations, and legal principles.
  • Conducting legal research and analysis to support case preparation and prosecution strategies.
  • Obtaining and assessing critical information and documentation from courts, police services, correctional institutions, and other agencies.
  • Supporting Crown Prosecutors through courtroom coordination, witness management, and file preparation.
  • Collaborating with prosecutors and stakeholders to advance files and resolve issues efficiently.
  • Providing procedural guidance and support to members of the prosecution team.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • 4 years of progressively responsible related experience as a Legal Assistant or a Paralegal in specialized prosecutions or experience working in a criminal law office

Equivalencies for education and experience will be considered on the basis of 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education. For example, 1 year of Legal Assistant Certificate plus 5 years of progressively responsible related experience.

Assets:

  • Strong knowledge of legal processes, as well as a firm foundation of legal assistant experience
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint)
  • Proficiency with JOIN, PRISM, Criminal E-File (Search Programs)
  • A valid Alberta Motor Vehicle Operators License, or equivalent.

Minimum recruitment standards outline the minimum education and experience required for appointment to a job classification.

  • One temporary full-time position (Until March 31st, 2028)

Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

Travel within Alberta to circuit court locations may be required occasionally.
