Job summary

The Operations Supervisor role at GFL Environmental Inc. in Dartmouth, NS reports to the Operations Manager and steers a team of Operators to ensure safe, efficient day-to-day waste services operations.

Responsibilities include enforcing health and safety policies, overseeing training, assigning tasks, and tracking performance while maintaining housekeeping and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years in a leadership, managerial or supervisory role.
  • Experience in industrial services, waste management or environmental services.
  • Class 3 driver's license.
  • Experience in a union environment is an asset.
  • Knowledge of production management processes, manufacturing equipment and preventive maintenance principles.
  • Ability to develop safe operating procedures.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, OMS and Workday.
  • Strong organization, time management and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work evenings and/or weekends, if required.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and customer service skills.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise daily operations, providing feedback, coaching and leadership to the operating team.
  • Resolve and record employee-related issues including disciplinary matters.
  • Lead and develop direct reports using Job Task Observations, Vital 9s and Hazard Assessments.
  • Monitor compliance with internal policies and regulations.
  • Participate in recruitment and onboarding of new hires.
  • Plan, direct and monitor work for Operators per client requirements.
  • Ensure documentation (work orders, logs, inspections) is accurate and timely.
  • Coordinate maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
  • Support EMS and OH&S programs and site safety meetings.

Job description

Reporting directly to the Operations Manager, the Operations Supervisor is responsible for creating a zero harm environment, maintaining efficient day-to-day operations, and for the effective supervision of Operators.

Job Duties

Health and Safety:

  • Ensure on-site operations are conducted in accordance with corporate policies and procedures, within permit conditions and to customer specifications with a significant focus on health and safety
  • Strong focus on safety, maintenance and housekeeping in accordance with company and regulatory requirements including seasonal winterizing of fleet vehicles Report and identify all incidents, hazards, safety infractions, non-compliance issues and participate in the investigation and development of corrective actions
  • Ensure Field Level Hazard Assessments and site inspections are completed
  • Ensure internal and external training is up to date for Operators
  • Ensure Job Task Observations (JTO’s) are completed and up to date for Operators
  • Actively participate in branch safety meetings
  • Conduct training as required
Employee Relations
  • Supervise daily operations, providing feedback, coaching and leadership to the operating team
  • Resolve and record all employee-related issues including such issues that require disciplinary measures
  • Lead, motivate and develop direct reports utilizing Job Task Observations (JTO’s), Vital 9s and Hazard Assessments to reinforce or correct specific behaviors
  • Monitor compliance for direct reports to internal policies and applicable regulations and legislations
  • Participate in the recruitment process and support the onboarding and training of new hires
Operations
  • Plan, assign, direct and monitor work for Operators based on client requirements
  • Ensure operational documentation is accurate and completed in a timely manner including but not limited to work orders, driver logs, pre-trip vehicle inspections, BOL’s, manifests, maintenance repair logs, etc.
  • Communicate atypical waste disposal projects with the Waste Water Treatment Team
  • Coordinate the maintenance of assigned vehicles and equipment
  • Maintain and implement standard operating procedures (SOP’s/SWP’s)
  • Identify and recommend continuous improvements to processes and procedures
  • Support the site’s Environmental Management System (EMS) and our Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Program
  • Ensure all visitors to the site (Contractors, brokers, etc.) are complying with site and corporate safety policies
  • Ensure the compliance of all contractors’ site compliance utilizing Field Level Hazard Assessments and Safe Work Permits
  • Perform emergency operation activities as needed
  • On call as needed to meet client requirements
Requirements
  • Post-secondary education would be considered an asset
  • Minimum of three (3) years in a leadership, managerial or supervisory role.
  • Related industrial services operational experience preferred with knowledge of waste management and environmental services
  • Class 3 drivers license
  • Experience in a union environment is an asset
  • Knowledge of production management processes, manufacturing equipment and preventative maintenance principles
  • Ability to develop safe operating procedures
