Job summary

A waste management company in Ontario is seeking a Technician 1 for Industrial Services to receive and manage client waste, operate machinery, and ensure compliance with environmental standards. The ideal candidate will have post-secondary education in a related field and must be safety-conscious, detail-oriented, and able to lift heavy loads. This is an entry-level, full-time position with opportunities for growth in the company.

Qualifications

  • Familiarity with waste management regulations is an asset.
  • Previous hazardous and non-hazardous waste management experience is an asset.
  • Emergency response availability, including evenings and weekends.

Job description

Join to apply for the Technician 1 (HPW), Industrial Services role at GFL Environmental Inc.

Key Responsibilities
  • Receive all client waste – both bulk liquids/solids and containerized.
  • Take samples from waste vehicles and containers for lab analysis.
  • Load and unload waste vehicles including vacuum trucks, tankers, straight trucks and van trailers.
  • Operate plant machinery and assist with general maintenance.
  • Control and monitor chemical reactions in chemical process reactors, storage tanks, etc.
  • Control and monitor chemical handling equipment (pumps, compressors, blowers, boilers, air systems, etc.).
  • Perform wastewater treatment and discharge according to our site‑specific Environmental Certificate of Approvals (ECAs) and associated compliance requirements from the Region of Peel.
  • Perform acid/base neutralizations efficiently, safely and effectively.
  • Assist with preparing shipments of hazardous and non‑hazardous waste for transport.
  • Gain a full understanding and working knowledge of the company’s standard operating procedures (SOPs) and ensure they are followed.
  • Notify the Shift Supervisor/General Manager of any defects, damages, mistakes, errors, contamination, spills, or other incidents or accidents that are identified.
  • Document and report completion status of work assigned by the Shift Supervisor/General Manager.
  • Comply with rules, procedures, safe work and hygiene practices, health and safety standards, and use of personal protective equipment.
Knowledge, Skills & Key Competencies
  • Post‑Secondary education in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering/Technology or related internship.
  • Familiarity with waste management regulations, Ontario regulation 347, and Transportation of Dangerous Goods is an asset.
  • Previous hazardous and non‑hazardous waste management experience is an asset.
  • Previous experience operating air‑diaphragm pumps and bulk liquid transfer systems is an asset.
  • Propane forklift experience/certification is an asset.
  • Mechanical aptitude, including knowledge and use of hand tools.
  • Motivated, able to multi‑task, work effectively in a team environment.
  • Safety‑conscious, detail‑oriented.
  • Comfortable working in a primarily outdoor environment.
  • Willing and able to achieve proper respirator PPE fit and seal relative to facial hair growth limits.
  • Ability to follow procedures and execute work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to lift upwards of 50 lbs.
  • Emergency response availability, including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to read, write, understand, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Offers of employment are conditional upon successful completion of required drug and alcohol testing.
