Since 1983, we’ve proudly served as the voice for local dairy farmers, advocating for their interests at both the national and provincial levels. We ensure fair production practices, policy alignment, and effective supply chain coordination to benefit our farmers, partners, and communities.

Our close collaboration with organizations like the School Milk Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador demonstrates our commitment to health, education, and the well-being of future generations.

Overview of the Role

The Operations Manager – Transportation plays a vital leadership role in overseeing the newly established transportation division at the Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Labrador (DFNL). Reporting directly to the General Manager, you will oversee the safe, cost-effective, and efficient movement of milk throughout the province, ensuring timely collections and deliveries, operational excellence, and strong financial stewardship.

As the Operations Manager, you will apply your expertise in logistics, transportation, and financial management to build and oversee a high-performing division that meets regulatory standards, exceeds stakeholder expectations, and strengthens DFNL’s position as a trusted industry partner.

Your areas of responsibility will include, but are not limited to:

  • Transportation Operations Oversight Oversee the planning and execution of milk collection and delivery schedules across Newfoundland and Labrador. Ensure reliable operations through effective coordination of equipment, drivers, and logistics systems while minimizing disruptions and optimizing delivery times.
  • Financial Management and Reporting Take primary ownership of the transportation division’s budget. Develop financial plans, monitor expenses and revenues, and prepare regular reports that assess the financial stability of the division. Use advanced Excel skills and financial tools to support cost control, rate setting, and data-informed decision making.
  • Strategic Planning and Compliance Develop and implement operational strategies and internal policies aligned with DFNL’s mandate and provincial/federal legislation. Continuously assess opportunities for improvement, innovation, and long-term efficiency gains in milk transportation.
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Relationship Building Build and maintain strong relationships with dairy producers, processors, government partners, and transportation vendors. Act as DFNL’s lead point of contact for resolving delivery issues, responding to scheduling needs, and representing the organization at meetings and industry forums.
  • Vendor Oversight & Management Oversee third-party transportation service providers and coordinate equipment maintenance and insurance needs. Work collaboratively across departments to ensure accurate quota management and strong alignment with organizational priorities.
  • Milk Quality Assurance Ensure strict adherence to milk quality standards by overseeing all aspects of raw milk pick-up, handling, and storage. Work closely with producers and milk haulers to maintain product integrity throughout transport, including proper sampling procedures and delivery practices, in alignment with regulatory requirements and processor expectations.

Ideal Candidate

  • Post-secondary education in logistics, supply chain, finance, business administration, agriculture, or a related field; an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • 5+ years in a transportation, logistics, or supply chain operations role with increasing responsibility.
  • Demonstrated experience managing budgets, preparing financial reports, and providing financial oversight for a department or operational unit.
  • Strong financial modeling and analytical skills to assess transportation costs, model rate structures, forecast budget impacts, and support data-driven decision making.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite with advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including the ability to build and manage complex spreadsheets, use formulas and pivot tables, and create dynamic financial models to support budgeting, forecasting, and operational analysis.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of provincial and federal transportation policies; experience in agriculture or dairy industry is a strong asset.

Requirements
