Surrey Schools Welcome Centre is seeking a Settlement Worker in Schools (SWIS) to assist immigrants, refugees, and eligible clients with initial settlement needs and ongoing integration into Canadian society. You will support newcomer families as they adapt to the education system and local resources.

The role focuses on student settlement, language proficiency, mental health support, and cultural adjustment, with occasional evenings and weekend hours aligned to the district calendar.

Competenze

• Fluency in English and another designated language is required.
• Experience with diverse populations and newcomer families is essential.
• Knowledge of immigration policies and settlement issues is preferred.
• Ability to engage youth and support language proficiency and cultural adjustment.
• Proficiency in using common software for communication and scheduling.

Mansioni

• Conduct settlement needs assessment and action planning with clients.
• Provide settlement consultation on education system and community resources.
• Offer specialized programming to children and youth.
• Provide referrals and short-term counselling support.
• Collaborate with school teams to support transitions for complex cases.
• Provide interpretation and translation related to settlement issues and family needs.
• Assist with school registration and enrollment processes.
• Advise parents about the BC education system and involvement in school life.
• Advocate for clients when appropriate.
• Develop culturally appropriate informational materials.
• Orient school staff on newcomer issues and needs.
• Engage hard-to-reach families and organize settlement-related events.
• Coordinate with partner organizations for service linkage.
• Maintain client records and ensure confidentiality.
