Surrey Schools (School District #36 Surrey) seeks a bilingual Settlement Worker in Schools (SWIS) to assist newcomers, focusing on immigrant students and families, with emphasis on mental health, language proficiency, and cultural adjustment.

The role supports school registration, outreach to hard-to-reach families, and coordination with district Welcome Centre staff. Evening and weekend shifts may be required; salary is hourly and benefits included.

Competenze

• Two years post-secondary education in social sciences, social work or counseling.
• Minimum two years experience with diverse populations, and especially with newcomers to Canada. Experience with refugees is a plus.
• Proficient with Outlook and MS Office; able to learn new technologies as needed.
• Strong facilitation and communication skills, including delivering workshops to large groups.
• Flexible schedule to cover evenings and weekend hours as needed.

Mansioni

• Conducts settlement needs assessment, action planning, and provides referrals.
• Provides settlement consultation on education system, health, housing, and community resources.
• Provides specialized programming to children and youth.
• Provides referrals, accompaniment, and short-term emotional counselling.
• Collaborates with settlement and school teams to support transitions for students with barriers.
• Provides interpretation and translation related to settlement issues and family needs.
• Assists schools with registration and enrollment.
• Aids parents in understanding the BC education system and involvement in school life.
• Advocates on clients' behalf when appropriate.
• Develops culturally appropriate information/materials.
• Trains school staff on settlement/newcomer issues.
• Maintains contact with hard-to-reach families.
• Organizes settlement-related events/workshops.
• Conducts outreach activities.
• Maintains up-to-date client files and ensures confidentiality.
