Job Overview

The Junior Underwriter supports the underwriting team by reviewing documentation to ensure compliance with company and insurer policies and guidelines, focusing on service excellence. Responsibilities include applying due diligence in reviewing documents for accuracy, protecting the company from risk, and escalating issues or incomplete items to the Mortgage Underwriter and management as necessary. This role offers a great opportunity to develop into a mortgage underwriter.

Initially, training will be provided, and the position is largely remote, with in-office attendance required once or twice per month.

Core Responsibilities

  1. Deliver exceptional service when interacting with brokers, clients, and stakeholders;
  2. Establish and maintain positive relationships with external partners such as mortgage brokers, insurers, appraisers, title companies, and solicitors;
  3. Collect all required documents to satisfy mortgage loan conditions;
  4. Report documentation concerns to the Underwriter and Manager for review and approval;
  5. Record clear notes within the loan underwriting system;
  6. Follow up on outstanding conditions and documents;
  7. Maintain high standards of AML/Compliance and Quality Assurance obligations;
  8. Handle difficult interactions and unpopular decisions effectively;
  9. Stay updated with evolving policies and procedures;
  10. Assist with special projects and perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

  1. At least 2 years of experience in residential mortgage application processes;
  2. Knowledge of credit analysis and risk management principles;
  3. Proficiency in PC software in a Windows environment;
  4. Ability to make and document well-considered decisions to proactively manage risk;
  5. Strong negotiation and problem-solving skills;
  6. Ability to adapt to changing volumes while maintaining turnaround times;
  7. Strong customer focus to ensure an exceptional customer experience;
  8. Ability to work remotely with high performance;
  9. Highly communicative and collaborative;
  10. View oneself as a key part of the internal and external culture;
  11. Quick decision-making ability without compromising quality;
  12. Undergraduate degree is an asset;
  13. French language skills are an asset.
