Job summary

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of thermal management for electronic products.
  • Familiarity with 3D printing and CNC machining.
  • Understanding of GD&T and tolerance stack-up analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop mechanical products and enclosures from customer requirements and specifications.
  • Lead housing and enclosure design development for electronic controllers, including aluminum castings and machined parts.
  • Create detailed 3D models and manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks.
  • Apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) to improve manufacturability, cost and reliability.
  • Develop and implement production fixtures, assembly aids, and testing fixtures to streamline processes.
  • Collaborate with suppliers on mold design, casting design, prototype development, and production readiness.
  • Perform thermal, vibration, environmental, and mechanical evaluations to ensure product performance.
  • Build, assemble, and evaluate prototypes; identify and implement design improvements from testing results.
  • Source mechanical components and work with suppliers to support NPI and ongoing production.
  • Prepare and maintain BOMs, engineering change documents, and assembly instructions.
  • Support pilot builds, manufacturing scale-up, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Provide technical support to Production, Quality, Purchasing, and Marketing teams.

About the role

  • As part of the Mechanical Design team, the chosen candidate will work on new product development projects. This will involve enclosure design, supplier selection, dealing with heat transfer calculations, vibration management and testing, prototyping plastic enclosures, assembly drawings and assistance in pilots.

What you'll do

  • Create detailed 3D models, manufacturing drawings, and technical documentation using SolidWorks.
  • Apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles to improve product quality, manufacturability, cost, and reliability.
  • Develop and implement production fixtures, assembly aids, and testing fixtures to streamline manufacturing processes and improve efficiency.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and toolmakers on mold design, casting design, prototype development, and production readiness.
  • Perform thermal, vibration, environmental, and mechanical design evaluations to ensure product performance and durability.
  • Build, assemble, and evaluate prototypes; identify and implement design improvements based on testing results.
  • Source mechanical components and work closely with suppliers to support new product introduction and ongoing production
  • Prepare and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs), engineering change documentation, and assembly instructions.
  • Support pilot builds, manufacturing scale-up, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Provide technical support to Production, Quality, Purchasing, and Marketing teams throughout the product lifecycle.

Qualifications

  • Technical degree in Mechanical Engineering with 5+ years of work-related experience.
  • Experience designing aluminum die-cast or machined housings
  • Experience with plastic injection molding design, including material selection, draft angles, ribs, bosses, and tooling considerations.
  • Experience designing manufacturing fixtures, assembly jigs, and product test fixtures
  • Knowledge of thermal management techniques for electronic products.
  • Familiarity with prototype manufacturing methods, including 3D printing and CNC machining.
  • Understanding of GD&T, tolerance stack-up analysis, and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience supporting product validation, environmental testing, and regulatory compliance is considered an asset.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in technical reporting and supplier interaction.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and analytical thinking.
  • Experience with electronic enclosures is considered an asset.
  • Work well independently and in team environments.
