Job Summary

A Material Planner in an automotive parts manufacturing company is responsible for efficiently managing the supply chain by ensuring that the right materials are available at the right time and in the right quantities to meet production demands. The role involves coordination with various departments and suppliers to optimize inventory levels and maintain a smooth production flow.

A Material Planner plays a crucial role in balancing inventory costs with production requirements, ensuring that the right materials are available at the right time to support a seamless manufacturing process. Their ability to forecast demand, optimize inventory levels, and collaborate with suppliers contributes significantly to the overall success of the automotive parts manufacturing company.

Job Responsibilities

Your supervisor may from time to time ask you to perform other related duties not specifically included in this job description. This job's key responsibilities include:

  • Demand Forecasting: Collaborate with production and sales teams to forecast material requirements based on production schedules and customer orders.
  • Inventory Management: Maintain optimal inventory levels to meet production needs while minimizing excess or obsolete stock. Monitor inventory turns and adjust ordering parameters accordingly.
  • Bill of Materials (BOM) Administration: Interact with Production Control to ensure BOMs are accurate and up to date. Review and audit BOMs to reflect latest manufacturing practices. Review Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) with Finance and update BOMs as needed. Prepare and maintain BOM change requests for PRDV Finance approval. Analyze raw inventory costs, research variances, and report findings. Coordinate BOM management across departments.
  • Order Placement: Generate purchase orders for raw materials, components, and finished goods based on production plans and inventory levels. Ensure timely communication with suppliers.
  • Supplier Coordination: Build and maintain strong relationships with suppliers to ensure reliable deliveries.
  • Material Expediting: Monitor and expedite shipments to ensure timely receipt. Communicate with suppliers regarding delays or issues.
  • Collaboration with Production Planning: Work closely with production planners to align material availability with schedules. Adjust plans as needed.
  • Risk Management: Identify supply chain risks and develop contingency plans. Monitor market trends affecting material availability or costs.
  • Data Analysis and Reporting: Analyze data on material usage, inventory, and supplier performance.
Job Qualifications
  • Education: College Diploma in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, Operations Management, or related. High school diploma with relevant experience considered.
  • Work Experience: Several years in material planning, supply chain, or related fields.
  • Industry Knowledge: Familiarity with automotive industry and manufacturing processes is advantageous.
  • ERP System Proficiency: Experience with ERP systems used in automotive manufacturing.
  • Project Management: Experience in project management for process improvements is beneficial.
  • Adaptability: Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and handle disruptions effectively.
