Job summary

Bethany Care Society is seeking a Manager, Safety to lead the organization’s safety, workers' compensation and disability management programs at the Bethany Corporate Office in Calgary. You will develop and oversee strategies, policies and training to improve injury prevention, claims outcomes and COR retention.

Reporting to the Executive Director, Employee Experience, you will partner with cross-functional teams, ensure regulatory compliance, manage audits and drive continuous improvement

Qualifications

• Degree or diploma in HR, Business Administration, Information Systems or related field.
• CRSP or CHRP certification preferred.
• Workday certifications are considered an asset.
• Minimum 3–5 years of progressive experience leading safety.
• Experience with workforce reporting, analytics, payroll, time tracking and absence management.
• Experience in a unionized healthcare or continuing care environment is preferred.
• Experience in the not-for-profit sector is considered an asset.
• Advanced Microsoft Word, Excel and reporting tools.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder relationship skills.
• Project management and continuous improvement mindset.

Responsibilities

• Identify needs, objectives and priorities for safety, workers' compensation and disability management.
• Design, develop, implement and evaluate Safety, WCB and disability programs.
• Ensure compliance with provincial health and safety legislation.
• Monitor WCB claims experience and premiums.
• Maintain COR and pursue improvements.
• Oversee return-to-work plans and rehabilitation strategies.
• Ensure proper incident documentation and reporting.
• Audit safety and disability management programs regularly.
• Provide training across safety and disability management areas.
• Collaborate with consultants and manage external relationships.
• Lead injury prevention and disability management initiatives.

About The Role:

This position reports to the Executive Director, Employee Experience, and is accountable for recommending and developing Bethany’s strategy with respect to employee and volunteer Safety, and the planning and management specific to the organization's focus on Workers' Compensation.

What You Will Do:

Accountable for identifying needs, establishing objectives and setting priorities for Bethany with respect to Safety, Workers' Compensation, and Occupational Disability Management related programs. Accountable for the design, development, administration, implementation and ongoing evaluation of Safety, Workers' Compensation and Disability Management programs and policies.

Ensures Bethany’s compliance with provincial occupational health and safety legislation.

Monitors WCB claims experience and premiums to ensure that Bethany is assessed appropriately.

Ensures Bethany’s Certificate of Recognition (COR) is retained and identified opportunities for improvement are actioned.

Maximizes financial entitlements from WCB through effective claims management.

Ensures appropriate action is taken for occupational health and safety incidents.

Ensures surveillance of hazards for early intervention and appropriate action.

Ensures that documentation of incidents and related reporting requirements meet or exceed Bethany’s and legislated standards.

Ensures appropriate audits are completed on a regular basis.

Ensures management is trained and competent in safety, disability management, and Workers' Compensation tools and processes.

Reviews and recommends return-to-work plans, strategies, rehabilitation, and independent medical reviews in consultation with insurance carriers.

Researches and evaluates best practices and develops and implements appropriate programs.

Ensures complete and accurate disability management and safety records are maintained and data reported to management.

Ensures sites are compliant with health and safety standards.

Prepares regular statistical information and analysis on trends in safety compliance and performance in disability management.

Utilizes the services of external consultants where appropriate and manages the relationship.

Leadership:

Communicates opportunities and path to achieving sustainable results in injury prevention, claims and disability management, and COR retention.

Ensures a high standard of performance and a strong customer service orientation by providing regular feedback and enforcing procedures and standards.

Leads the effective administration of all Safety, Workers' Compensation and Occupational Disability Management programs.

Teamwork:

Consults with stakeholders to ensure programs and policies meet the business strategy and needs of the organization.

Coordinates and interfaces with other key departments and consultants for designing, developing and enhancing approaches to injury prevention and disability management.

Supports the development and delivery of relevant safety and disability management training programs and courses.

Acts as the primary contract between the Workers Compensation Board and management on issues related to account status and disability management.

Coordinates organizational response to incident investigations, WCB reporting, modified work and return to work planning.

Utilizes the services of external consultants where appropriate. Manages the consulting relationship.

What You Bring:

Degree or diploma in Human Resources, Business Administration, Information Systems or related discipline.

Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) preferred.

Workday certifications are considered an asset.

Minimum 3–5 years of progressive experience leading safety.

Experience in a unionized healthcare or continuing care environment is preferred.
