Facilities Management clients include faculty, staff and students. As part of Facilities Management the Trades Shops reflects high service delivery standards and requirements. The team works together to ensure effective, efficient and safe performance for the operation, maintenance and repair of building systems on campus.

Under direct or general supervision, the Maintenance Worker will provide labourer or semi-skilled services in one or more trade, or qualified areas of practice as defined by the Industrial Training Authority of BC (ITA), BC Safety Authority and/or recognized licensing or training institutions. The incumbent assists trades persons or technicians, acts as labourer, performs semi-skilled tasks for which the incumbent has been trained to safely perform.

Regulated work shall be performed only by incumbents holding required qualifications. The incumbent performs related duties of similar scope and complexity in collaboration or independently within a single discipline or multidisciplinary shop and full-service facilities department which provides such services as plant and facilities engineering maintenance services. The incumbent will also assist in emergent situations, as reasonably declared by employer, within the physical and skill capacity of the individual.

Shall conform to all best practices in relation to UVic. Regulated and industry standards of work and behaviors, including compliance to WorkSafe BC regulations.

Performs basic routine maintenance tasks or assists in renovations and construction, volume of this type of work dependent on crew or work assignment.

Experience

This position requires a level of experience equivalent to 2 years of experience in related industry and in a similar capacity.

  • Some tasks may require limited qualifications, below that of a journeyman or technician level qualification (meaning 4 – 5-year apprenticeship or formal training curriculum, as defined by the Industrial Training Authority of BC (ITA), BC Safety Authority and/or recognized licensing or training institutions).
  • Some tasks will have required on-the-job-training (OJT), documentation will be required to verify OJT, training and verification of proficiency by a qualified person for that trade or qualified work.

Specialized Knowledge/Education: (For all crafts or Section Assignment)

  • Working knowledge of maintenance and construction industry terminology and general practice, as related to labourer or semi-skilled worker.
  • Valid British Columbia driver’s license.
  • Good physical health, sufficient strength, stamina and coordination to perform a variety of routine heavy manual and machine operation tasks continuously.

Skills/Abilities

  • Ability to use initiative and follow instructions.
  • Ability to carry out an effective work schedule, under general supervision and utilize materials and equipment for maximum benefit.
  • Ability to plan and organize work efficiently.
  • Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, staff and students.
  • Ability to keep simple records.
  • Ability to use resources and supplies in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to use simple and common hand and power tools effectively (both fixed and portable) associated with trades (drill press, girders, pipe threading etc.)

Additional Requirements

  • Willingness and ability to work any recognized shift including weekends.
