Job description

As stewards of the campus, Facilities Management fosters and enriches an inviting and functional environment that welcomes and supports all who come here. Facilities Management clients include faculty, staff, and students. The Trades Shops team works together to ensure effective, efficient, and safe performance in the operation, maintenance, and repair of campus building systems.

Under direct or general supervision, the Maintenance Worker provides labourer or semi-skilled services in one or more trades or qualified areas as defined by the Industrial Training Authority of BC (ITA), BC Safety Authority, and/or recognized licensing or training institutions. The incumbent assists tradespersons or technicians, performs semi-skilled tasks safely, and acts as a labourer.

Regulated work must be performed only by those holding the required qualifications. The incumbent performs related duties of similar scope and complexity, either independently or collaboratively within a single discipline or multidisciplinary shop, providing plant and facilities engineering maintenance services. The role also includes assisting in emergent situations within the physical and skill capacity of the individual.

The incumbent shall conform to all best practices concerning UVic standards, industry standards, and compliance with WorkSafe BC regulations.

Basic routine maintenance tasks or assistance in renovations and construction are performed, with the volume depending on work assignment.

Experience: This position requires approximately 2 years of relevant industry experience in a similar capacity.

  • Some tasks may require qualifications below that of a journeyman or technician, such as a 4-5 year apprenticeship or formal training curriculum.
  • On-the-job training (OJT) will be required for certain tasks, with documentation verifying proficiency by a qualified person.

Specialized Knowledge/Education:

  • Working knowledge of maintenance and construction industry terminology and practices related to labourer or semi-skilled work.
  • Valid British Columbia driver’s license.
  • Good physical health, strength, stamina, and coordination to perform heavy manual and machine operation tasks.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to use initiative and follow instructions.
  • Effective work scheduling under supervision, utilizing materials and equipment efficiently.
  • Planning and organizing work efficiently.
  • Maintaining cooperative relationships with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Keeping simple records.
  • Using resources and supplies cost-effectively.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Effective use of hand and power tools associated with trades.

Additional Requirements:
