Job summary

Richmond Steel Recycling is seeking a Maintenance Supervisor to lead the maintenance team and ensure the reliability, safety, and availability of plant and mobile equipment in a heavy industrial environment.

Reporting to the Operations Manager, you will plan and coordinate preventive, corrective, and shutdown maintenance, supervise welders, millwrights and mechanics, manage subcontractors, and maintain accurate CMMS records while monitoring costs and driving improvement.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 7+ years of experience in a maintenance or industrial setting.
  • 2+ years of supervisory or leadership experience in a maintenance environment preferred.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot equipment issues and provide technical guidance to maintenance teams.
  • Experience planning and executing maintenance shutdowns.
  • Proficiency with CMMS systems (e.g., Manager Plus) and Microsoft Office.
  • Project management experience related to equipment repairs, upgrades, or installations.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and cross‑functional collaboration skills.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, heavy industrial environment.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate preventive, corrective, and shutdown maintenance activities in conjunction with the Maintenance Scheduler.
  • Supervise and provide technical leadership to a crew of welders, heavy‑duty mechanics, and millwrights.
  • Assign work, prioritize tasks, and ensure maintenance activities are completed safely, efficiently, and to standard.
  • Lead and support troubleshooting of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and automation issues as required.
  • Ensure maintenance activities comply with safety standards, company policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Liaise with external contractors and vendors, including coordinating scope of work, timelines, and performance.
  • Support shutdown planning and execution, including resource planning, contractor coordination, and post‑shutdown review.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate maintenance records, reports, and documentation using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
  • Monitor maintenance costs and contribute to budget planning and cost control initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Operations and other departments to minimize equipment downtime and improve plant performance.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to equipment reliability, maintenance processes, and safety.
  • Participate in investigations related to equipment failures, incidents, or near misses and implement corrective actions.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop maintenance employees to build technical capability and succession readiness.
  • Ensure compliance with lockout/tagout, confined space, and other critical safety procedures.
  • Additional duties as assigned

Position Description: Maintenance Supervisor

Department: Operations / Maintenance

Reports to: Operations Manager

Direct Reports: Maintenance Crew (9) and Contractors

Nature of Position: Permanent, Full-Time

Salary: $115,000 – $130,000 annually

GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for overseeing all maintenance activities to ensure the reliability, safety, and availability of plant and mobile equipment in a heavy industrial environment. This role leads a skilled maintenance crew and external contractors to deliver planned, preventative, and corrective maintenance while minimizing downtime and controlling costs.

The Maintenance Supervisor plays a critical role in supporting operational continuity by ensuring equipment is maintained to a high standard, maintenance work is properly planned and executed, and safety and compliance requirements are met at all times. This role requires strong technical expertise, leadership capability, and the ability to balance hands‑on field supervision with planning, reporting, and coordination activities.

The successful candidate will foster a positive, engaged, and productive maintenance team while collaborating closely with Operations, Safety, and external service providers to support RSR’s production and sustainability goals.

JOB DUTIES

EDUCATION & CERTIFICATIONS
  • Mechanical or Electrical Engineering diploma, degree, or equivalent experience OR
  • Red Seal Certification in a relevant trade such as Electrician, Industrial Millwright, Heavy Duty Mechanic, or a related skilled trade

WORK CONDITIONS
  • Full-time, on-site position, Monday to Friday

  • Work performed indoors and outdoors in a heavy industrial environment, including exposure to noise, machinery, and varying weather conditions
