Under general supervision performs maintenance work requiring an intermediate degree of skill. Work involves inspection, repair, maintenance and installation of all types of plant equipment and machinery; employees will be designated based on area of specialization such as welding, diesel, pumps, or pipe fitting but are not specifically limited to any one of those areas.

- Performs maintenance work requiring an intermediate degree of skill in the checking, inspection, repair, maintenance and installation of all types of plant equipment and machinery
- Performs work involving the tearing down, inspection, repair, replacement, setting up, and alignment of electrical and /or mechanical machinery and equipment, as well as correcting the troubles that develop in such equipment
- Performs work involving the overhaul and repair of such equipment as boilers and accessories, fans, heat exchangers, condensers, piping, valves, ducts, casing insulation, air heaters, mills, pumps, motors, diesel engines, steam turbines, generators, desalination plants, gas turbines and similar equipment including compressors, air dryers, fuel filters and diesel engines
- Maintains equipment, tools, and work areas in a clean and orderly condition; works with other employees in cleaning equipment, tools, and work area after completion of the job
- Assists, as directed, employees of equal or higher classification in carrying through work assignments
- Changes oil filters, changes oil and checks equipment daily; reports all irregularities or abnormal conditions to supervisor
- Removes defective parts and adjusts functional parts using hand tools, power tools and other measuring and testing devices
- Operates forklift and other automotive equipment
- Working knowledge of the principles and techniques of at least one of the mechanical trades
- Working knowledge of the tools, equipment and materials used in the maintenance and repair of power and water plant equipment and machinery
- Working knowledge of practical and efficient methods of maintenance and repair work; knowledge of preventative maintenance program and procedures
- Thorough knowledge of safety practices and procedures and occupational hazards of the trade
- Ability to carry through oral and written work assignments without close supervision
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all persons contacted during the course of the work
- Ability to read, interpret and work from moderately complex blueprints and specifications; ability to determine working conditions and to detect flaws or defects in operation
Graduation from high school, including or supplemented by courses in the mechanical and metal trades; and two years of experience in power and water desalination plant maintenance work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
