Job summary

The Current seeks a skilled Line Cook to prepare high-quality breakfast and lunch items for our student-owned campus café. You will follow recipes, maintain a clean kitchen, and ensure all food is prepared safely and stored properly.

Ideal candidates will have café/restaurant line cook experience, a Food Handler Certification, and the ability to work mornings and weekdays. This position offers part-time hours and in-person work on campus.

Qualifications

  • Previous line cook or kitchen experience in café/restaurant environment.
  • Knowledge of food safety regulations and safe handling procedures.
  • Food Handler Certification is required.
  • Ability to work mornings, weekdays, and events as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and cook a variety of breakfast and lunch items.
  • Follow production schedules to minimize waste and ensure freshness.
  • Prepare ingredients, wash, chop, measure, and organize for service.
  • Maintain a clean, organized kitchen and food prep area.
  • Handle food safely, label, store and monitor inventory.
  • Assist with receiving, rotating, and FIFO inventory practices.
  • Support daily opening and closing duties and team collaboration.

Job Purpose:

The Current is seeking a skilled, reliable, and motivated Line Cook to prepare high-quality breakfast and lunch menu items for our student-owned and operated on-campus café. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing food to established recipes and standards, maintaining a clean and organized kitchen, and ensuring all food is prepared, handled, and stored in accordance with food safety, sanitation, and public health standards.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and cook a variety of breakfast and lunch menu items, ensuring consistent quality, presentation, and portion control.
  • Follow daily production schedules to ensure fresh food is available while minimizing waste.
  • Prepare ingredients by washing, chopping, measuring, and organizing food items for service.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient kitchen and food preparation area.
  • Ensure all food is prepared, stored, labeled, and handled in accordance with food safety regulations and best practices.
  • Adhere to all public health, sanitation, and workplace health and safety standards.
  • Monitor inventory of food products and kitchen supplies and communicate restocking needs to management.
  • Maintain accurate inventory counts of food production items.
  • Operate kitchen equipment safely and report any maintenance or equipment concerns as needed.
  • Assist in developing new menu items, daily features, and seasonal offerings.
  • Maintain consistent food quality, portioning, and presentation standards.
  • Complete daily cleaning, opening, and closing duties as required.
  • Work collaboratively with café staff to support efficient daily operations and provide excellent customer service during service periods.
  • Assist with receiving, rotating, and properly storing deliveries using FIFO (First In, First Out) inventory practices.
Qualifications
  • Previous line cook or commercial kitchen experience in a café, restaurant, or food service environment.
  • Knowledge of food safety regulations, sanitation practices, and safe food handling procedures.
  • Food Handler Certification.
  • Experience preparing breakfast and lunch menu items in a fast-paced environment is considered an asset.
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 kg (55 lbs) and stand for extended periods.
  • Reliable, dependable, and able to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Flexibility to work mornings, weekdays, and occasional special events as required.
