Job summary

YMCA Calgary is seeking a part-time LINC Instructor for the morning shift, contracted through March 31, 2027 with potential extension. The role involves delivering English language lessons to adult newcomers, aligning with Canadian Language Benchmarks, maintaining records, and assessing progress.

The successful candidate will have a BA in English or Education, PBLA awareness, and strong communication skills. In-person mornings only.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Arts in English Language, Languages, or Education.
  • TESL/TESOL/ESL certificate is an asset.
  • PBLA awareness and PBLA certification are assets.
  • PBLA teaching experience is an asset.
  • Standard First Aid with CPR-C within 12 months is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and deliver English language lessons to adult newcomers based on Canadian Language Benchmarks.
  • Maintain records of lessons and student progress; use portfolios.
  • Assess progress and update materials to improve listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
  • Attend Professional Development days and report to LINC Supervisor.

LINC Instructor - Morning (Part Time, Contract)

Salary: $31.05/hour -$37.40/hour

Start Date: October 1st, 2026

End Date: March 31, 2027 with possibility of extension

What qualifications are we looking for?

  • Completed Bachelor of Arts degree in English Language, Languages, or Education
  • TESL/TESOL/ESL Certificate is an asset
  • Awareness of the PBLA system of assessment, PBLA Certification is an asset
  • Teaching experience required; PBLA teaching experience is an asset
  • Willingness and commitment to certify PBLA through online training
  • Awareness of and empathy for issues facing new Canadians,
  • Current knowledge of LINC/ESL and resources,
  • Superior communication and leadership skills,
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team,
  • Current Standard First Aid with CPR-C certificated within the last 12 months from an approved AB OHS provider. Asset if certification is issued by one of the following five Canadian organizations: Canadian Red Cross, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Lifesaving Society, St John's Ambulance and/or Canadian Ski Patrol.
  • Evidence of a clear Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Search,
  • Three professional references.
What does this role look like at YMCA Calgary?

LINC Instructors will:

  • Prepare and deliver interesting, relevant and meaningful lessons in English language and Canadian culture to adult newcomers to Canada based on the Canadian Language Benchmarks and needs of the students;
  • Maintain records of previous lessons; researching and utilizing a variety of teaching resources;
  • Ensure activities are developing the students’ listening, speaking, reading and writing skills;
  • Perform assessments of students’ progress on a regular basis (using student portfolios); introduce new activities and materials to enhance student learning;
  • Assess individual student needs; address student problems as necessary; monitor classroom activities and dynamics;
  • Maintain accurate student records of attendance and portfolios;
  • Maintain up-to-date instructor binder and submit attendance sheets daily;
  • Submit lesson reports monthly;
  • Attend quarterly Professional Development days
  • The LINC instructors are part of the YMCA team and report to the LINC Supervisor.
