Licensed Practical Nurse - Special Clinics

Department: Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority

Job Information

Reporting to the Regional Manager of Primary Care, and as part of the Primary and Specialty health care team, the LPN Special Clinics assesses implements and evaluates client care. The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Special Clinics acts as a liaison between clients and practitioners, and works closely with the Medical Clinic Assistants to ensure clients are treated with respect and dignity while receiving services in an organized, efficient, professional and confidential manner.

The LPN Special Clinics carries out the responsibilities of the job in accordance with the philosophy and objectives of the Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority and within established LPN scope of practice.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge and ability to apply the nursing practices and processes within the LPN scope of practice.
  • Ability to assess and facilitate learning needs of the client as pertaining to the applicable disease, treatment and preventative health care needed.
  • Ability to work in an integrated, multidisciplinary primary and specialty care setting.
  • Ability to use standard medical equipment, including, but not limited to: blood glucose machines, suction tubes, sharps, oximeters, etc.
  • Ability to monitor and evaluate own beliefs and behaviors with regard to prejudice and personal biases and change behavior as needed.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and multitask while paying close attention to detail.

Typically the above qualifications would be attained by:

  • Valid NWT license as LPN.
  • 3 years' experience with a full scope of practice, including medication administration.
  • Experience in medical/surgical practice considered an asset.
  • Within NTHSSA, LPNs must be registered with the Government of the Northwest Territories - Department of Health and Social Services.
