Job description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. Continuous improvement in quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

The Remote Certified Primary Care Nurse practices autonomously, utilizing an extended scope of practice defined by various regulatory guidelines, including provincial legislation, BC College of Nurses and Midwives scope of practice, standards, and code of ethics; Nurse and Nurse Practitioners of BC decision support tools; Island Health policies, procedures, and guidelines; and individual nurse competencies.

This role involves working independently and as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team, providing direct patient care and participating in health promotion activities for groups and individuals in remote communities. The care approach must be community and culturally sensitive, client-focused, aiming to maintain or improve health. It encompasses disease prevention, chronic disease management, and acute care across the lifespan, including emergency assessment, treatment, palliation, health status assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation of interventions, and coordination of health services.

Travel may be required, and transportation arrangements must meet Island Health operational requirements, potentially including the use of a personal vehicle.

Qualifications: Education, Training, and Experience
  • Remote nursing certification or eligibility to obtain it within one year of hire.
  • Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN(C).
  • At least three years of recent related experience, with knowledge of community programs, their interrelationships, and care delivery functions, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Basic Life Support Level 'C' certification; Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Trauma Nursing Core Course, or equivalent.
  • Completion of STI certification is preferred.
  • Valid driver's license.

  • Proficiency in conducting initial and ongoing client assessments and providing nursing care based on evidence-based guidelines.
  • Ability to instruct clients and others on health-related topics.
  • Knowledge of care planning, care coordination, and community programs and services.
  • Understanding of community health practices, chronic disease management, emergency, geriatric, and palliative nursing within a client- and caregiver-centered approach.
  • Conflict resolution, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Sound judgment, observation, assessment skills, tact, and empathy.
  • Ability to intervene effectively in crisis or difficult situations.
  • Effective communication skills for inter-professional collaboration and respectful workplace environment.
  • Time and resource management capabilities.
  • Self-awareness and commitment to continuous professional development.
  • Ability to incorporate research and evidence-based practices into nursing care.
  • Competence in operating related equipment and technology, including computer applications.
  • Ability to promote positive change and perform all duties of the position.
  • Use of a personal vehicle may be required.
