The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a Learning and Instructional Designer. This Full-time Fixed Termposition is for approximately 24 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
The Designer will create resources, promote learning communities, and will act as a critical resource for core learning management platforms and educational technologies including D2L Brightspace, Zoom, Yuja, and Top Hat.
Reporting to the Manager, DVM Program Administration.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Instructional Design and Project Management
- Design, develop, and facilitate short-term (e.g. 1-3 hour) faculty workshops related to a variety of learning, instructional and course design strategies and topics
- Consulting and provide advice to individuals across UCVM to develop and/or customize resources related to course design and delivery
- Developing online, video and print-based resources to support evidence-informed learning, instructional and course design approaches and practices
- Administering, implementing, and evaluating educational technologies to support teaching and learning, including, identifying emerging tools, managing existing platforms, and ensuring the effective integration of technology
- Evaluation and analysis of the impact and success of learning and instructional design initiatives, workshops, programs and approaches, with a focus on continuous improvement, using appropriate and relevant evaluative methods
- Investigating and evaluating the current and future needs of the academic community by conducting needs assessments and environment analyses, related to best practices and approaches in learning and instructional design and learning technology integration
- Participating in and provide leadership within professional learning communities and initiatives that bring together networks of practice from across the university, related to current and on-going learning and instructional design practices and approaches
Consultation, Training and Leadership
- Providing one-time or ongoing consultation for faculty instructors individually and in small groups on a variety of learning and instructional design strategies and approaches to create effective learning environments that address the specific needs of individual instructors
- Collaborating with faculty, IT, and leadership to align technology initiatives with organizational goals and educational best practices
- Developing training resources, supporting faculty and student adoption, and evaluating the impact of technology on learning outcomes
- Fostering positive and professional working relationships with faculty instructors to build teaching and learning capacity and sustain on-going support, guidance, and collaboration
- Using professional judgement to ensure an appropriate level of diplomacy is employed to inform and educate faculty instructors about possibilities for best practice in learning, instructional and course design
- Providing strategic leadership, guidance, support, patience, and online teaching expertise to faculty instructors; and using diverse methods for providing support, as needed, for each instructor or instructor team
- Evaluate based on the best practices the impact and success of learning and instructional design initiatives, workshops, programs and approaches, with a focus on continuous improvement, using appropriate evaluative methods
- Investigating and evaluating the current and future needs of UCVM by conducting needs assessments and environment analyses, related to best practices and approaches in learning and instructional design and learning technology integration
Strategic Planning & Emerging Research
- Staying current with scholarly literature and evidence-based practices and citing appropriate scholarly resources to appropriately link current scholarly research related to learning, instructional and course design to programs, project plans, and initiatives
- Analyzing unique and complex educational contexts to generate pragmatic, customized solutions and resources for academic staff, graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and staff related to a variety of learning, instructional and course design strategies and approaches, for online, blended and face-to-face environments
- Employing current research in the field of higher education into daily tasks
- Researching and evaluating new educational technologies to enhance learning, instructional and course design approaches and learning environments within the post-secondary context
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Master's degree is required, ideally in Education, Instructional Design, or Educational Technology is required
- Five to ten years of directly related instructional design experience is required
- Teaching experience is essential; teaching experience in education is strongly valued
- Demonstrated ability to lead projects and initiatives related to learning and instructional design is required
- Strong ability to incorporate instructional design theories and practices, scholarly evidence, and professional experiences
- Strong demonstrated understanding of pedagogical theories and evidence-informed learning and instructional design practices in a university context
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering the development of expertise in teaching and learning to promote continuous learning and improvement
- Experience required designing, developing, and producing educational resources and instructional materials to support online and face-to-face learning environments
- Proficiency in a wide range of online learning technology platforms such as D2L Brightspace, Articulate 360, etc.
- Experience utilizing collaborative tools such as OneDrive, Teams, Qualtrics and Zoom
- Experience with administering learning technologies, developing online, video and print-based resources
- Experience with workshop facilitation and presentation, including online training
- Strong facilitation skills, including experience designing, delivering and evaluating workshops, programs, projects, and consultations
- Strong ability to determine their work-related priorities and deadlines for the purpose of achieving collaborative team and individual project plans
- Strong written and oral communication and presentation skills, including an ability to summarize technical information to a non-technical audience
- Strong leadership, self-motivation, self-direction, and an ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Highly skilled in interpersonal, organizational, communication, critical thinking, problem solving
- Ability to perform comfortably in a fast paced, highly complex environment with multiple projects, and competing deadlines
- Personal initiative and a strong focus on collaboration and teamwork
- Strong attention to detail with a commitment to achieving team, unit and organizational goals
- High degree of flexibility, responsiveness, and professionalism
