Job summary

City of Brandon is seeking a Learn to Skate Instructor to support Brandon’s Community Sportsplex. The role focuses on developing fundamental skating skills in a fun, safe environment.

You will prepare individual lesson plans, teach sessions on Saturdays, and evaluate participant progress to foster participation and enjoyment. The position is temporary, with training beforehand, and requires first aid, CRC and related checks.

Qualifications

• Emergency First Aid and CPR C Certification within 60 days of appointment.
• Successful completion of Child Abuse Registry Check and Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Person’s Check.

Responsibilities

• Gather required equipment in advance of lessons.
• Greet program participants and assist them in putting on equipment.
• Provide instruction to program participants on the prepared lesson plans.
• Complete evaluations and reports.
• Keep the skate lock-up tidy.
• Correspond with parents after class when required.
• Respond to questions from participants and parents related to the program.
• Provide a safe, cooperative and enjoyable environment for program participants.
• Other duties related to the program as may be required.

Position Conditions

This program consists of 5-8 lesson sessions, year-round. Lessons typically take place on Saturday mornings. Training will take place on a flexible/casual basis in advance of commencing employment. This is a temporary position and will be offered in accordance with conditions identified in the Collective Agreement between the City of Brandon and CUPE Local 69. This opportunity is open to all applicants; however, first consideration will be given to current City of Brandon CUPE employees. The City of Brandon reserves the right to underfill this position

Rate of Pay:

$17.37- $23.26 per hour (2026 Rates)

The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.

NOTE:

This competition will include an interview.

Purpose of Position

The Learn to Skate Instructor is focused on helping individuals develop fundamental skating skills in a fun and safe environment at Brandon’s Community Sportsplex. This position involves preparing individual program plans, instructing skating programs and evaluating the progress of program participants while promoting interest and encouraging participation in program activity. Instructors work to ensure that participants have a positive experience and are performing the skills in a safe manner as set out in the established programs.

Mandatory Qualifications & Experience

• Emergency First Aid and CPR C Certification within 60 days of appointment;
• Successful completion of Child Abuse Registry Check and Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Person’s Check.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

• Skate instructor coaching certification;
• Previous skating instruction or coaching experience;
• Previous experience working with children;
• Previous experience working in a multi-ethnic setting.

Work Conditions

The Learn to Skate Instructor works independently and in a team environment.

• Self-motivated and quality driven to perform independently (frequently);
• Wide variety of tasks requiring ability to make independent decisions (frequently);
• Work in a shared and consultative manner with other employees (frequently);
• Position requires shift work which may include days, evenings, and weekends;
• Responsible to the Program & Events Coordinator.
