Job description

YOU DON'T JUST ARGUE CASES - You build them to win.

The Opportunity

This is a 12-month fixed-term position

When insurance claims become complex, contested, or litigious, you're the person who steps in with confidence. You thrive in adversarial environments, know how to build a compelling defence, and understand that protecting AMA's interests means being two steps ahead. Reporting to the Director, Legal Services - Litigation for AMA, you'll be responsible for providing legal advice, advocacy, and representation with a focus on claims litigation and insurance defence matters impacting AMA.

A Place to Belong

AMA is more than a workplace; it's a family. Together, we help protect the things that matter most to our more than one-million members-everything from roadside safety to retail savings, food security to childhood well-being. And with operations that span automotive, registries, travel, insurance and more, the opportunities to grow with us are almost limitless!

For us, curiosity fuels innovation. We value people who are eager to explore new ideas and who are comfortable putting emerging technologies into practice. We see experience with AI‑powered tools like ChatGPT, Copilot, and similar platforms as a real plus - especially when it's used to work smarter, increase efficiency, and find better ways to get things done .

Building on a century of proud service in Alberta communities, we're passionate about making a meaningful difference in the places where we live and work. And that all begins with our people. As part of the AMA team, you'll enjoy:

  • Competitive wage
  • Employee-exclusive discounts on travel, insurance, memberships, and more
  • Ongoing professional development
  • Vacation earnings paid out with each pay period
  • For the right candidate, flexible or hybrid work models may be available.
Who You Are
  • You thrive in adversarial settings: preparing for examinations, arguing motions, and presenting well-reasoned positions that hold up under scrutiny.
  • You dig deep into the facts and the law, synthesizing case law and legislation to deliver clear, strategic advice on claims and coverage disputes.
  • You understand both the litigation and advisory sides of insurance defence, vigorously representing AMA's interests while helping the business navigate risk.
  • You manage your own files with discipline but know when to collaborate with senior counsel, external counsel, and business partners to get the best outcome.
How You'll Make an Impact
  • Manage and advance insurance defence and claims litigation files- including MVA, Property and First Party claims- from initial engagement through to resolution, preparing cases for litigation and reviewing complex documents relating to matters in which the company is involved.
  • Conduct thorough legal research into case law, statutes, and regulations relevant to insurance and claims matters, preparing accurate summaries and written opinions.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate legal documents including briefs, contracts, correspondence, and memoranda, examining documents for legal accuracy and completeness.
  • Represent AMA in various legal matters, advocating for the organization's position to other parties and negotiating settlements or agreements on behalf of the company.
  • Assess litigation risk and damages exposure, providing alternatives and recommendations that support sound business decisions while ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Advise on proposed changes to Acts and Regulations that affect AMA's operations, identifying potential impacts on current practices and processes.
  • Work closely with lawyers in the Corporate Team/Insurance Group, company management, external counsel, and other stakeholders to resolve issues effectively.
  • Supervise and delegate work to legal assistants as needed.
What You Bring to the Table
  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD).
  • Active membership with the Alberta Law Society.
  • 5+ years of insurance defence and claims litigation experience. Other related experience may be considered.
  • Ability to independently manage a litigation file load and balance multiple priorities under firm deadlines.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and legal research skills with the ability to assess litigation risk and damages.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to advocate, negotiate, and draft clear and persuasive legal documents.
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to build positive working relationships with peers, management, external counsel, and clients.
