Job summary

AMA - Alberta Motor Association in Calgary seeks a lawyer to handle insurance defence and claims litigation. Reporting to the Director, Legal Services - Litigation, you will provide advocacy and representation across claims matters impacting AMA.

Ideal candidate brings 5+ years in insurance defence, strong legal research, and excellent negotiation skills. This fixed‑term, in‑office role offers competitive compensation and professional development opportunities.

Qualifications

Must have LLB/JD and active Alberta Law Society membership.
5+ years of insurance defence and claims litigation experience.
Ability to independently manage a litigation file load and balance multiple priorities under firm deadlines.
Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and legal research skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication with negotiation and advocacy abilities.

Responsibilities

Manage and advance insurance defence and claims litigation files from engagement to resolution.
Conduct legal research into case law, statutes, and regulations relevant to insurance and claims matters.
Draft, review, and negotiate legal documents including briefs, contracts, and memoranda.
Represent AMA in legal matters and negotiate settlements on its behalf.
Assess litigation risk and damages exposure to support business decisions.
Advise on changes to Acts and Regulations affecting AMA’s operations.
Collaborate with Corporate Team/Insurance Group, management, external counsel and stakeholders.
Supervise and delegate work to legal assistants as needed.
