Job summary

St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto is seeking a Laboratory Assistant/Technician to perform phlebotomy, prepare specimens, and manage pre-analytical steps in a fast-paced clinical setting.

You will register specimens, verify LIS entries, and ensure timely delivery to work stations, while rotating through areas and supporting QC and inventory tasks as needed.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a recognized Laboratory Assistant/Technician program or equivalent experience.
  • CSMLS/OSS certification required.
  • Proficient in phlebotomy and all specimen handling procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize workload in a fast paced environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must be punctual with excellent attendance.

  • Sorts, allocates and delivers specimens to work stations and instruments.
  • Receives, unpacks and sorts incoming specimens.
  • Prints and distributes laboratory reports.
  • Responds to customer inquiries by phone and email as needed.
  • Rotates through different work areas as required.

Job description

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Performs phlebotomy and collects capillary blood specimens.
  • Registers specimens and verifies for entry into the LIS system.
  • Enters data for bar code generation.
  • Performs pre-analytical procedures (e.g., centrifugation, aliquot, prepare smears and solutions, etc.)
  • Sorts, allocates and delivers specimens to work stations, and loads onto instruments as appropriate.
  • Receives, unpacks and sorts incoming specimens.
  • Prepares specimens for send-out to external clients.
  • Participates in performing basic QC and inventory management
  • Printing and distribution of laboratory reports.
  • Responds to all customer telephone inquiries.
  • Rotates through different work areas as required.
Qualifications
  • Successful completion of a recognized Laboratory Assistant/Technician Program or equivalent experience required.
  • OSMT or CSMLS certification required.
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods certification an asset.
  • Must be proficient in phlebotomy and all aspects of specimen handling.
  • Must demonstrate ability to work independently and prioritize workload in a fast paced environment.
  • Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must be able to work cooperatively and constructively with other team members.
  • Must understand and be committed to the mission and values of St Michael's Hospital
  • Must be punctual and have an excellent attendance record.
HOURS OF WORK

Must be willing and able to work rotating shifts, weekends and statutory holidays as required.
