Job summary

Scarborough Health Network’s Shared Hospital Laboratory is seeking a Laboratory Assistant to support specimen receiving and microbiology workflows. You will plant specimens to media, respond to results requests, and assist senior staff in daily microbiology operations.

The role requires a Michener Institute or equivalent certificate with preferred bacteriology experience in a fully automated lab and familiarity with MALDI, Kirby Bauer, and AST.

Qualifications

• Michener Institute Certificate, or equivalent as a Laboratory Assistant, or Career Canada Certificate, or OSMT.
• Preferred 6 months of experience in bacteriology with knowledge of media and different incubation times for setup in a fully automated microbiology lab.
• Preferred knowledge of setting up Maldi, Kirby Bauer and AST using instruments like Bruker and Phoenix.
• Demonstrated problem recognition and problem solving skills.
• Demonstrated good organizational skills, ability to organize work and set priorities.
• Ability to work independently or as a team member in a fast-paced environment.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both verbal and written.
• Demonstrates values consistent with hospital Code of Conduct and is committed to fostering a healthy and positive work environment.

Responsibilities

• Perform duties in the specimen receiving area, planting specimens to media and answering results requests.
• Assist the Senior Technologist and Operations Manager with general duties in the Microbiology department.

Job Description

Position Overview:

Reporting to the Operations Manager of Microbiology Department in Shared Hospital Laboratory, you will be responsible for performing duties in the specimen receiving area.
